As we know there can be many many electrical connections to the dashboard that makes removal and replacement a pain.

Putting it all on a plug and socket would help but it tends to be difficult to find a suitable plug with enough connections at a sensible price

So how about this idea from your local Maplin: an ATX power connection extender for a PC motherboard:

The beauty is it has 24 connections and comes ready terminated with opposite sex connectors at each end

OK so there going to be quite a bit of soldering (I highly recommend heat shrink sleeving and use of a hot air gun for such things btw) but pretty neat I reckon. Even the wires themselves are nice and substantial

Just solder on to your trailing leads from such things as warning lights and rev counters etc on the car side and on the back of the dash on the other side and you can plug and play!

I have often wondered if the supposedly 'cheap imports' are indeed lower quality than the same type of item purchased from UK sellers.

About 5 years ago I bought some bronze coloured heat wrap for the legerra. I did a superb job in fact I didn't even know the manifold had cracked in two until I removed it. I did speculate that it may actually have been the cause of the crack due to the manifold getting too hot. I think at the time I paid about £15 for 2 metres with a few SS cable…

About 5 years ago I bought some bronze coloured heat wrap for the legerra. I did a superb job in fact I didn't even know the manifold had cracked in two until I removed it. I did speculate that it may actually have been the cause of the crack due to the manifold getting too hot. I think at the time I paid about £15 for 2 metres with a few SS cable clips.

Moving on, I was offered a similar item on an internet 'import' site called Wish.com. 2" wide x 5m long and only £6 + £1 shipping so half the price and twice the quantity being a 'good deal' I bit the bullet and spent the £7.

It arrived this morning and is identical to the stuff I bought 5 years ago, packaging is better and twice the number of SS cable ties. Of course the proof will be when its wrapped around a four branch and put to the test in anger.

I bought a couple of other bits a while ago basically because they were not available anywhere else.

A mic for my phone which fools the phone into thinking a headset is connected and thereby allows recording video using an external mic. Tested it a couple of times and not over impressed but still tweaking that little gadget. It seems to work too well as at flat chat on the motorway it actually overloads the audio input and cuts out. Its not crisp like i expected it to be and I may end up sacrificing a couple of broken headsets to replace the mics. Further testing and fettling required. Cost £3 delivered.

10 COB LED bulbs (capless 501 type) £2 inc delivery (more on these later in the XSC build) I havent received these yet but as they are also available in bags of 100 I will be getting more if they are up to scratch and doo the job.

So, have any of you had 'cheap imports' that have exceeded expectations or indeed been complete and utter failures?

Still sore yesterday and stuck together again this morning so went to the doctors who said he could see some bits in my eye and sent me to a&e. Local anaesthetic on the eye and then eyeball scraped with a needle. Got some drops and gotta go back tomorrow to have 3 more metal fragments removed that are currently stuck. Eye stinging like a bitch now!

I've just had my newest toy delivered. It is a Racelogic Vbox Sport. Let's not mention the price (£249 + VAT). This datalogger measures speed, using GPS, and it takes data samples every 50 milli-seconds. You can connect it up to an ipad or iphone and it will do instant graphs and measurements. It also logs the data to an internal SD card so that you can use it on your computer, either with their software or something else. I imported it into Excel to make my own graphs.

I found a suitable bit of flat road to have a blast in the Legerra and I did two acceleration runs, getting a best 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds. I haven't worked out how to make the best getaway, I just used 2,000 rpm and lots of throttle and got wheel spin for most of first gear. If the gearing was just a little higher then I could get to 60 in second, like the RS2000 did, and that would save about half a second. Because it was at night on an unlit road, I had my distance glasses on so I couldn't really see the poorly lit rev counter so my gear changes were not quite on the 6,000rpm.

The Legerra has a bog standard 2.0 Pinto driving through a 5 speed box to a 4.23 Escort axle. I have 15" wheels with 195/65 tyres giving maximum speeds of 31mph, 58mph, 83mph, 114mph and 137mph in the gears (though I've not gone over 80 for fear of losing my roof).
