Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

one of the car with hard top.....

and one with the soft top.....

the phaeton is still in my drive and it really really has to go.......ebay this week some time i think.

as for the Legerra, well it has given me some fun and games, first it boils up like a kettle....er well it did it now has a much larger radiator and some ducting on the radiator. it seems to make a difference.

the car goes quite well but it did have a hot staring issue which turns out to be a duff ballast resistor even though the car has electronic ignition. easy to fix and the car now starts hot reliably.

the suspension is very stiff and it will be softened up a bit, but the car handles quite well.

it has a MG miget dash in the car and i feel it really suits the car....more pictures later

got the cortina radiator out of the Legerra (its deeper than the Escort radiator it had by about a 1/5th) and compared it to the Hyundai ATOZ radiator i have.

you can see they are very close in size but the fan on the Hyundai is huge.....the radiator is of a similar type to the Cortina using the same style of un-pressurized radiator and expansion tank

the Ford radiator is copper cored the Hyundai is aluminium but with a denser core. they are almost the same thickness with the Hyundai a little thinner. i suspect they have the same capacity.

the Hyundai radiator is mounted top and bottom on pins, the ford from the side by metal plates. this is to my advantage because there will be enough room to get the air intake pipe to the side of the radiator.

the radiator pipes are actually better placed for the Zetec engine i am fitting as they ideally want to be on the N/S of the engine bay anyway.

on holliers for a couple of weeks and thought i would get on with my car......but i keep coming up against problems.

My car was fitted with a type 2,  4 speed gearbox and i had the choice of a type 3 gear box (no clutch arm for the Box) it has the same size propshaft as the type 2 but it is 2" longer as well ....so it would need a new propshaft making as well as well as gear lever moving.

Then my Type E gearbox 4 speed.....larger propshaft, so new prop....again...... box is the same length as the type 3 so also gear lever needs to be moved.

Type 9 gearbox...5 speed...... same overall length as the Type E (weirdly) but also no clutch fork, also new prop needed

MT75 5 speed,,,,,,again...new prop but gearbox is bulky. at the point the prop fits it is wider than the transmission tunnel,,,

nothing is going right for me on this one.

i need a clutch fork for the type 9 and the type 3 and then i will decide which box to fit.

The saga continues....

Gear box woes......now i know there used to be something on the DOC forum about gearbox compatibility but i cannot find it. Anyway an out line of my problems........

fitted to car type 2, 4 speed. small propshaft output, small input shaft. gearbox mount 18" from bell housing...

Type 3 (spare) same input and propshaft BUT gearbox 2" longer to gearlever overall.....

Type 9 (spare) bigger input and propshaft, gearbox same length as type 3 BUT gearbox mount is 4" further rearwards......

Type E (spare, but sold) as Type 9......its even exactly the same length as type 9 overall !

MT 75  (spare) as for Type 9 BUT it is much wider to the rear of the box.......it wont fit in transmission tunnel with out surgery to tunnel.

to fit the Type 9 or the MT 75, ideally i need to remove the body and mount the engine and box then refit the body as for both the engine mounts would be better remade as the box is in contact with the tunnel and it wants centrally locating, besides even though the chassis has been modified for the 5 speed box's it wasn't drilled for the mount to bolt to and working that out with the body on is just to daunting.....the likely hood would be that the engine mounts will also have to be moved because getting it right would be very hard, and there isn't enough room in the engine bay for it to be an easy job. body off a doddle....

some pictures of the gearbox's

the Type 9 and type E next to each other......

type 9 gear lever to bell housing

Type E and Type 3 gearlever to bell housing distance.....they are the same as the Type 9...

gearbox mount on the Type 3 (and Type E box's)

the type 9 is 4" further rearwards......to be honest selling the Type E to my mate wasn't the best idea i have had...but hey ho! i owed him several favors and he was desperate for the box.

Cheers Daryl.
Oh it looks like the clutch from the type 2 will fit the type 3 it wont fit the type 9 or mt 75....ALSO the release bearing is different on the type 2 from the type 3.......Argh!

I will have a look and see if I have it on the backup of the website stored on my PC.

Dave, you have mail.

what exactly is it you are trying to do Dave?

my car came with a 2.0L Pinto and a weedy type 2 gearbox.....it died, lay shaft bearings i think. any way i thought easy job its a ford RWD gear box there all compatible......Nope..... i found a type 3 gearbox and went to fit it, no clutch fork (same as type 9 as it turns out) and no release bearing. the type 2 clutch fork is too short and the release bearing too small to go on the bearing shaft. the type 3 and all of the other gear box's are two inches longer so i would also need a new propshaft. some of the gear box's have the gearbox mount in a different place ....so more work.

All i am trying to do is get my car back on the road, but it needs a huge amount of work to get any of the stronger box's to fit. the body will have to come off to do most of it. i dont want to do that just now. it may yet be the most practical solution.

were i to do that i would also look to swapping the engine as well (My Zetec 1800, )

a type 2 gear box to fit into my car just to get it on the road for now might be the best idea.

amazed a pinto fits on a 'type 2' Guess it must have 1.3/1.6 pinto flywheel and clutch. Looks like another 'type 2' is your short term solution though they don't like engines with horse power in double figures :-)

Cheers Ade....might be doing a full chassis strip and rebuild, could be the only way to properly sort the bodges....

not mine but i just keep finding .......bodges....... things that just should not be there. to fit the engine and gear box properly and to sort both the front and rear suspension, parking the body somewhere whilst i crack on with it..or not i really dont know what to do just at the moment.
