Last week's autotest at Dallachy airfield. 8th out of 10, but a fun day. Clutch cable seems to need permanent adjustment, though, or it'll go squeaky then fall off.

on my clutch cable i had to cut the rubber grommet to get it to fit nicely...once done it was fine.

It may also be possible to fit it rotated through 180 degrees in both directions and use the top bolt but i'm not sure.

There is a nylon stop / bearing on both cables, mk 1 is smaller and a snug fit into the tube, mk2 won't go in unless the tube is cut and enlarged. The tube should be in a straight line with the pull direction from the pedal if that helps. If using an escort pedal box it should bolt onto the bottom bolt closest to the engine with the tube at the top sloping down into the engine bay. It goes through the elongated hole above the BMC.

Ah right. I got my fab guy to make up a new spreader plate with the cable at a shallower angle, as the existing one with the existing cable meant there was two bends, both of which had broken the cable. He made up the new one to suit the shorter Mk2 cable. It's just possible he didn't know about the nylon stop and it's not fitted on mine. I'll have a look. Cheers again lad.

That sounds like the standard ford setup, you'll not be missing anything that end. Mk1 and MK2 cables are different. Where is goes into the bulkhead there is a nylon 'stop'. the mk 1 was only about 3/4 inch or less, the mk2 is twice that size. Most Duttons were supplied with a tube and plate setup welded at 45 degrees. Not exactly competition spec as spreader plates go. This is for a mk1 cable, too small for mk2 .

I'll try to take a photo next time I'm at the workshop Adrian, but there's only an unthreaded hole in the gearbox flange through which the cable passes, and it's only two nuts locked together on the threaded portion of the cable against this face that sets the tension. Seems a bit crappy to me, I might be missing a part or something, I'm sure you'll be able to advise me!

New cable shouldn't really stretch so it must be something else. Fit that little blanking grommet, that'll stop the ball end falling into the hole and then out of the fork. Have a look at the bulkhead fitting, see if the fibreglass behind it is damaged?

Hi Adrian - it's a new cable, from a Mk2 Escort. It was falling off the the clutch fork end. Seemed to need more and more tightening as the day went on. As far as I can see, the only adjustment is a nut and locknut on the threaded end (gearbox end) of the cable.

Fall off what? The clutch fork or the pedal bracket? The pedal bracket should have a spring clip to stop the cable popping out if you are using an escort pedal box. If you fit a small blanking grommet to the fork (in the large part of the cable hole) that will help prevent the bottom dropping out too. Does the cable have an adjuster where the cable goes through the back of the engine / front of the gearbox? should have a locknut you can get some loctite or threadlock on. Is the cable fraying and stretching somewhere?
