This 'box is so compact and light, it has to be the future. I know this will be a challenge as I know nothing about engine management, but it is time I moved to the 21st century. Now just need to check out the 'box fully, currently can't find reverse (it has no lever with it), then find and engine. I know this is complete madness and you don't need that much power in a Phaeton, but it would be good cheap fun.
Project Hunk of Junk - Essex Advice Requiredtag:duttonowners.ning.com,2011-10-07:2398922:BlogPost:405542011-10-07T21:04:03.000ZDave Pricehttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/DavidPrice507

My momeries of driving a MK1 3.0 Capri were that the gearing really well suited the engine. So I have been worried that the 3.89 would be too low geared. I understand that low gearing equals lower top speed and faster acceleration. But what niggles me is that in my youth I had a race spec motorcross bike (very old bike). This bike went very well, great acceleration and fast top speed. I then fitted a larger rear sprocket to reduce the top speed. This reduced the top speed and killed the acceleration, the gears became too short, you were forever changing gear and could not make progress as rapidily as before. It is that niggle that has had me chasing a 3.54 diff. Would the car accelerate better with a 3.54 or a 3.89?
Project Hunk of Junk - Now have room to work on the cartag:duttonowners.ning.com,2011-09-12:2398922:BlogPost:385512011-09-12T20:38:00.000ZDave Pricehttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/DavidPrice507

Turning the vice handle, all was going well, the vice got a little stiff to turn, so I grabbed a length of tube to slip over the handle and then continued turning, the stud was progressing well. Then bang and everything fell on the floor. I picked up the plate / studs and socket ready to put it back in the vice. The vice appeared wide open and a little strange, I starred at it for a while and then realised that the casing that forms the front jaw of the vice that split across from the hole for the spindle, leaving only the spindle, handle and the lower half of the jaw. The other half was on the garage floor.. Well it is (was) a cheap Chinese vice that I bought twenty odd years ago. Must now go hunting a for real vice. Anybody got a vice for sale in the Lancashire. The final conclusion is that the rear tub is loose and sitting lower on the drivers side rear corner. You can easily see this as the overrider hangs down a lot lower below the spring on that side. It is about 20mm lower. If you shake the tub(boot) it is firm on the passenger side but loose on the drivers side. How is the rear of the tub fastened to the chassis? I have now got the engine lifted on to board with castors so I can move it. It was interesting trying lift an engine and gearbox with a trolley jack and bricks, so I could get it on too the dolly.Project Hunk of Junk - parts tidy uptag:duttonowners.ning.com,2010-12-02:2398922:BlogPost:133082010-12-02T22:01:17.000ZDave Pricehttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/DavidPrice507

Pistons - some lateral rotational play in the pistons, as the was on the other bank. But with these there is a pronouced knock as you twist the piston crown.

Conclusion - given the knocking sound when the engine is turned over by hand, the knock sound when you twist the pistons and the signifiicant silty dirty oil build ups in the engine. I suspect this engine has not been subject to regular oil changes. I think I may get away with the bores, but I think my new crank shaft will definqtely be required along with many many bearings. Now I know why when I asked the seller of the engine if it was a runner, he quickly said "yes" and then immediately changed the subject. Well I never expected it to be great as I only paid £50 for the engine and box.

Another thought may be to strip and scrap this engine and use V6 engine number 2, that is alledged to have been rebuilt 20 years ago and hardly used - wait and see.
