March 2020:

After a few enquiries came to nought, I haven't actively advertised my car since last year - but it's still for sale!

So, if you want a lovely car in time for the Show, please get in touch - preferably by e-mail, as unknown phone numbers sometimes get missed. Any viewing is welcome - come and see for yourself or I can send you some photos - all reasonable offers considered.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi All - As I said in my original post (below) it's hard to put a value on cars like this, but although I've had interest from various quarters, the car is still here so I have to assume I've overpriced it.

Now that the season is coming to an end and you may want something to keep you busy over the winter (not that it needs anything doing!), I'm opening it to sensible offers - say, £1750 ono.

If that makes it more tempting for you, please e-mail me to arrange a viewing.

Thanks, Chris

Hi All - Though new to blogging, I'm not new to the DOC and have been a member (off & on) for the last 14 years, while I've been to proud owner of a lovely orange (red?) Melos 1.3

Sadly, it's now up for sale as I no longer have the motivation to drive it and want to sell it to an aficionado who has.

It was meticulously built by a retired engineer in 1987, with full instrumentation and a superb interior. I've done 6000 miles in it since 2004, and it has been maintained by a professional mechanic.

We replaced the engine (oil leaks) in 2014 and the gearbox (noisy) in 2018. It comes with 2 spare gearboxes (!) and full wet weather gear, bought new and fitted by myself but little used.

Over the years I have replaced the battery, starter, alternator, radiator, brakes, etc to keep it in good condition and it has always been super-reliable. For most of its life it has been used at least every month, and has been to Stoneleigh numerous times.

It has been SORN'd since July 2017 but always starts and runs easily. I reckon all it will need for its MOT will be adjustment of the brakes.

Examples like this rarely come to market, so get in touch quickly if you're interested. I live a few miles from Lincoln.

Price? - It's always hard to value cars like this, but I'm hoping for offers over £2500 - it's a lot of fun for the money!

I'm unable to upload any photos to the blog, so please e-mail me and I can send you some. Or come and see it....!

After more than 30 years in storage I have finally transported my beloved Dutton to my home in France. Now to start the restoration of the car. At first look at the body reveals lots of gelcoat blisters and stress cracks, so a major cosmetic job is planned, but the original colour will be retained.
The chassis looks like it has survived the 30 years intact, I did paint it with Hammerite when I built the car and used Waxoyl in the tubes where I could. I will find out more when I remove the body and aluminum side panels, which only have a little surface corrosion.
I know that the bellhousing has to be replaced as it was cracked before I laid the car up. The brake system will need a major overhaul, I have already had to remove a brake drum to move the car on to the trailer. The last MOT it had in 1983 had an advisory of excess play in the steering rack and joints, 30 years of sitting would not have repaired that problem.
The hood and doors were in good order, until I lost the driver’s door on the M1, I saw it was coming loose but couldn’t stop due to no hard shoulder. I will have to find someone to make a new door using the passenger’s as a template.
So as soon as I have finished our study/office and emptied the garage of all the items that should be in the study, the car will be moved to the garage and work started. I have set myself a target for getting the car up and running, 1st May 2022, my 70th birthday.
Anybody interested in rescuing her?tag:duttonowners.ning.com,2020-01-27:2398922:BlogPost:2598502020-01-27T10:57:48.000ZJack Findonhttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/JackFindon

The box of parts that I was sold as a Dutton B Plus has now been assembled and with some drilling, hammering and bending most are now assembled together. The plan is now to strip it down and then reassemble a second time, not normal behaviour I know. Anyway I’m planning to be on the road early next year and hoping the Northern Duttoneers have some planned outings. Happy New Year to everyone keeping a Dutton on the road or warm in a garage.

Monday morning big yellow box with flashing lights outside my house for an hour saved her life. Another huge episode yesterday in intensive care. Not well enough for op yesterday. Under going big op this morning, promised she will be fit again soon. Bit of plumbing and rewiring and right as rain.

Hello all, and belated HNY to everyone!

I didn't manage to get the Phaeton out as much as I'd have liked last year, and I'm still waiting for that first win. Even in little events where it's me versus three Micras... quite embarrassing.

Anyway, I got the rear leaf spring mounts beefed up nicely after on failed. One rear damper was shot so it's on new spax gas adjustables at the back, and polybushes on the whole rear end. Other than that, we didn't really upgrade…

So, let's do some mad shit in 2019. I've verbally bought a Focus ST170 as an engine donor, picking it up when I get home. Now, compare a historic photo of the Phaeton engine bay:

With pinched-from-the-internet photos of an ST170 lump...

So, from what I can gather from some brief research, my main headaches will be:

Steering column. That massive inlet manifold with dual-length intakes is gonna sit right where my column is. As I want to keep everything OEM for now, I'll have have to find a way to re-route the column with UJs. It's already on a hybrid column due to running Corsa PAS so more chopping about will be required.

Bulkhead. Look at the throttle body and EDIS module, and how far back they sit from the rear of the engine. They're going to interfere with some fibreglass. I reckon the EDIS will relocate somewhere, maybe with longer leads, but the TB is just where it is. Some bits of tub may have to be sacrificed. Thermostat housing might also be a pest.

Clutch / flywheel. The ST170 is a dual-mass fly and the box has an atypical number of splines. So it'll all have to go. I believe an 1800 Zetec flywheel is the one to use, anyone got any more info than that? I'm guessing the CVH stuff will be no use, as the crank firing signal is taken from a trigger wheel on the front of the crank.

Exhaust. This will again be a suck-it-and-see job. The ST170 has a nice manifold as standard, 4-branch strainless with long primaries in a 4-2-1. Unfortunately it's designed for FWD. Would be nice if we can re-use as much of it as possible, but it's not going to come anywhere near my existing pipework.

Auxiliary belt. Losing the PAS and AC leaves a choice between adding an idler to keep the stock water pump spinning the right way, or run an even shorter belt with a grooved water pump pulley and reversed impeller. I reckon cheapness will be the order of the day.

Sump. I think the CVH one can be adapted. Some say it's a straight fit. We'll see.

And things that shouldn't be too much of an arse...

Engine mounts. I believe all Zetecs are much the same, and the CVH is in the same boat. My car previously had a Zetec before I bought it, hoping the mounts are going to bolt right up to the ST170 lump. Note - although it's badged "Duratec", it's actually a late-model Zetec - basically a Blacktop with a trick head and internals.

Cooling. I'll be keeping an eye on temps but the Civic 3-row alloy rad, although a cheapie, may well be enough. Pipework will be home-made from existing stuff.

Electrics. All OEM Focus still will be retained, so just a case of grafting it into the Phaeton loom. How hard can it be?

Anyway, I can't find any evidence of anyone else with the ST170 engine in a Dutton, unless anyone else knows better?

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated!
legerra gearboxtag:duttonowners.ning.com,2018-07-18:2398922:BlogPost:2442772018-07-18T23:20:34.000ZJames patonhttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/Jamespaton137

So, not wanting to pay Mk1/Mk2 Escort tax on a new radiator, I ordered a 3-row aluminium radiator. Intended for a Honda Civic, but cheap at £59 delivered and looked like it could be persuaded to fit. Needed a bit of angle welding in to act as a subframe, complete with little outriggers fitted with rubber locator bungs for the mounting pegs. Up top, I made up a couple of little bracket extensions to meet the top radiator mounts, with the expansion bottle also mating up to one of these. A few welding burns and a couple of cut-and-shut radiator hoses later she was all good again.

Also bought some Capri Special wheels for the front, as we've only ever had little 165 section front rubber and it's always been understeery. Only realised the night before a planned autotest event that these would need some large-seated wheel nuts, and I've got nothing like that in imperial. Plenty metric stuff left from my XR2 days, so I rescued the studs from my engine-donor Puma, pressed them into the Dutton and got the wheels on no bother. They do catch on the chassis on full lock, however, but we'll sort that out down the line.

Also had a new windscreen made up to replace my cracked one. I lost my bottle tightening it down, was sure it was gonna shatter. I put it somewhere safe and made a note to bring sunglasses. Which I forgot.

Anyway, the Autotest went well. Was up there with the quicker guys in the morning, but towards the end of the day people were saying my right rear wheel was moving fore and aft in the arch, with various clonks and bangs taking place over bumps. Turns out we've torn the leaf spring front mount out of the chassis. Having looked at the Dutton design, I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did.

However I managed a run at all the tests and got a finish. 4th overall out of 11 (I think) and a couple of 2nd or 3rd quickest times. Not bad, but my consistency needs worked on!

Anyway, back at base I've got the back axle off, turns out the sharp edge of the bracket smashed clean through the tub right next to where my arse cheek would have been. Nice. I've got a mate to make up some single-piece U-shape brackets in 6mm steel which he will weld into the chassis to replace the standard mounts, we'll upgrade the unbroken side at the same time. Also got a full kit of rear end poly bushes to on, and one of the Spax adjustable dampers is completely shot so that needs replaced, too.

I've also got a set of used compression struts for the front - will get my pal to knock up some brackets and I'll finally get these on. Looking forward to having fully independent front suspension! Looking forward to the next one, as we're gradually getting through the car's foibles. Starting to think it needs more power really soon!
legerra soft toptag:duttonowners.ning.com,2018-03-05:2398922:BlogPost:2412272018-03-05T20:09:24.000ZJames patonhttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/Jamespaton137

Just managed a couple of hours in the workshop. Been meaning to get the corner weights measured for a while, so have had a bit of time to thing about how to do it without handing over the car to a competition prep company or shelling out a fortune for proper corner weight scales. So... The Kemp Method. You will need:

8 pieces of 30mm thick decking board, cut to 320mm long. 4 need bevelled edges.

1 Salter Max Bathroom scale, rated to 250kg, or equivalent.

Arrange as shown, the bevels used for getting the car on and off the wooden step more easily, so are placed at the rear.

Then, one corner at a time, replace the front wooden step with the scales and roll the car forward.

I took three measurements on each corner, and worked out an average:

NSF = 184.0 / 184.0 / 183.5 = 183.83kg

OSF = 167.1 / 167.1 / 167.6 = 167.43kg

NSR = 167.0 / 166.3 / 166.3 = 166.53kg

OSR = 167.4 / 166.6 / 166.2 = 166.73kg

So, this gives a total weight of 684.53kg, and a front/rear split of 351.27/333.27kg, which works out at 51.3% front to 48.7% at the rear.

Buggered if I can figure out why the left front is so heavy. Could be an un-even ness in the garage floor, or maybe the right front spring is stuffed? But, either way, I'd have expected to see the difference reflected in the diagonally opposite corner.

Anyway, that's how to get your corner weights (and puzzle yourself with the results) for twenty quid.

Anyway, in terms of upgrades, about the only thing we've done is get the Peugeot 205GTi 1900 15" alloys fitted to the rear. Needed 20mm spacers, although I reckon 15mm worth might have done. Also discovered the car was already fitted with the long 63mm extended wheel studs, which was handy. A set of special wheel nuts from Speedshack and they're on.

With these fitted, I noticed there's a difference in gap between the chassis and the sidewall from the right to the left. Will be getting an adjustable panhard rod fitted, and renewing the leaf spring bushes to get everything into line.

Not picked up the compression struts yet, keep missing the guy! Also, not ordered new front struts yet either, although I'm now armed with a set of 250kg scales so can try some cheapo DIY corner weight measurement at some point.

And that's about it. Does look mean with the pug 15s on the back, though.

Hi all, hoping there's someone who can possibly shed some light on my engine problems. I have a zetec in the car running standard ford ECU and wiring.
A few days ago it suddenly dropped onto 2 cylinders on the way home, I found that it was fine once I was above about 3k rpm and accelerating. Ease off and it was straight back to 2.
Since then I have changed the coil pack and TPS (fault code in ECU). The engine had new leads and plugs 3 months ago.
I have tried unplugging the cam sensor, maf, idle valve, TPS. All seem to be working as expected.
There is continuity between ECU and all sensors. It runs on cylinders 2+3 with everything connected. I disconnected leads 2+3 from the coil and the engine ran on 1+4 instead. Disconnected 1+4 and it ran on 2+3. Connected all back up and I'm back to 2+3 only.
The strange thing is that the tachometer wavers (driven straight from the ECU), if I gently blip the throttle the needle momentarily drops and then recovers to 800rpm. Rev it for longer and the needle doesn't match engine speed going to about 1500rpm, occasionally twitching up to the expected level.
Its got me stumped but hoping there's an expert with another idea?new toy...tag:duttonowners.ning.com,2017-07-16:2398922:BlogPost:2368542017-07-16T07:25:51.000ZDave Adamshttp://duttonowners.ning.com/profile/DaveAdams
