Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Went and picked up a Phaeton from Big Vern (Cheers mate!) as a rebuild project. Its an S1 but has some S2 bits from the looks of it like the rear bodywork which has the bulges for spring hangers.

The plan is to strip it back to the bare chassis and then build it up from there, new bushes, calipers etc and a new engine just not sure what yet! It came with some goodies such as some Revolution wheels with yokos, a nice stainless exhaust and a new hood.

Looking forward to getting stuck in. Here's some pics, excuse the quality they're from my phone

Dave with respect to Tig welders, beware of the saying ..... You only get what you pay for!!

To be honest i am looking at a Tig welder as well. perhaps steve kerswell could advise? It a choice of the two and i will be keeping my current mig.

As it happens i am looking at a new welder......the eastwood mig 175. It comes with a spool on gun for ally welding as well as conventional torch. i am planning to make you a panhard rod chassis mount bracket if you want.

Hoping to crack on again this weekend, redo the shock mounts, make brackets for the panhard rod, make a scuttle support bar and mount the intercooler. Goggles/safety glasses will be worn!

I think I'm going to redo the top suspension mounts rather than the lower ones, I can get them vertical without the springs fouling the roll bar. I'm waiting for a post from Dave saying he has bought a new welder now too after using the one down the unit!

well we did quite well in the 4-5 hours we were at it, unbelievable that it was that that long. but as you say the axle moves up and down smoothly now. the shockers have the same issue as mine did they dont align with the axle mounts as they should.

pete has some fabrication to make a bracket for the panhard rod but it went well i think.

Dave Adam's came down today help sort out the rear suspension pick up points and add the extra trailing arm. We managed to get away with leaving the existing brackets on the axle but had to redo all of the chassis ones spacing them according. Bolts all slide in easily now and axle moves up and down nicely :) I've still got to do some work to the shock mounts and add the panhard rod and final welding but a lot of the hard work is done.

Started mocking up some pipework in the bay today, clocked the turbo to make it easier for when I do the intercooler pipe work. Made some templates for new panels on the dash and cut a couple of pieces of box section for the bottom of the transmission tunnel

I haven't done much to the car for a while, i've been waiting to get a new roll bar made before I could do anymore to the chassis. I've come to the conclusion that it isn't going to happen anytime soon with money being tight at the moment so have made the decision to crack on, I figure I can add a diagonal to give the existing one a bit more strength.

I started working on the seat back and transmission tunnel round the diff and tacked a couple of bits in place, when I sat in the car I was worried how narrow it was getting in there. I left it and thought about it for a bit remembering Paul has used the original tub in his so I thought I would take the air saw to mine and see if it would be any use.

This is where I ended up

I think i'm going to use it as it fits pretty well, the floor will need some work and I will have to some how blend the tunnel where it joins but gives me space and saves some work. The other benefit is that if I do replace the roll bar at some point it will be much easier.

What I really need now is to find someone to help me redo the rear trailing arm mounts as they are really badly lined up and I want to 5 link it, i'm not confident doing it myself. Anyone fancy giving me a hand? Once thats done I will get the final welding done on all the bulkhead etc and can then paint the chassis :)
