I was not allow the Tig until I had passed the aluminium welding test by oxy acetylene, as for mig and aluminium yes it's a common practice now, but use a helishied gas, argon is old hat nowadays, much better mixes about. The first 20mm. of aluminium mig is called the false cap, it never welds to a standard. It's to cold and does not mix with the parent metal, always use preheat and a run on plate. The same can be beneficial to steel mig. Cleanliness is important with any weld.

still have a full bottle of pure Argon, and i am trying to find a "spool on gun" torch for my new Mig welder to weld Aluminium. Playing with the TIG was fun but a steep learning curve to get good results and getting the Snap-on mig welder gave me the possibility of Ally and stainless welding using a MIG (my no-gas mig is mild steel only) but as i say getting good consistent results with the TIG would take time and Steve had just knackered his ....so it seemed an ideal solution.
I've been MIG welding ally today, can't understand what all the fuss is about as long as the surfaces are absolutely spotless my MIG copes quite well using Argon from a very big bottle.
