the top trailing arm bracket is broke......

the diff is sloping back a little (looking up) so that will need sorting.......

As you can see there isn't a lot of bracing in an S1 chassis, that will be sorted.

Sailsbury atlas is the same thing , not to be confused with the much inferior Koln (cologne) axle found mainly in MK3,4&5 Cortina's.

Its all rather confusing though as the differentials for all the Escort/Capri axles were made by Sailsbury.

i hadn't noticed my reflection but yes its there........and thats on a black paint finish.......shame it wont last long under the car.

these look like them, they are for Volvo 340, Hyundai Pony, Ford Capri Mk3 and Ford Escort Mk2 and for the RS 2000......

2.0L Cortina had a Koln axle 2.0L Capri had a Sailsbury Atlas as did very late MK2 RS2000.

Capri's switched to Atlas after the 1st year of MK2 production. All other Escorts remained with English.

this weekend other than the normal domestic stuff i have fitted the rear axle, only problem was the shocker mounting bolts are 13mm diameter and the existing holes were only 11mm. 

I have also got the front suspension ready to fit to the car, it has 190lb/in springs but the shockers are near to 45 degrees and i dont know if the springs will be stiff enough.

back to the rears though....you can see that the springs are a snug fit ...even more so when the boot section is in place.

now i have everything lined up the welds will be gone over and the whole thing tidied up but as with my last S1 the shockers when fitted to the top mounts do not fall to the axle mounts so they had to be "adjusted". hence the scrappy welds on the top mounts.

Another mod i have done is moved one of the 1/2" steel tubes on the rear of the cockpit so that i can fit the top shocker bolts from the inside of the car. because the boot when fitted is so close to the rear of the car it just seems easier to do it this way. its a shame the frame was in the way but Hey Ho!

Oh and another thing i have spotted the front Hillman Imp shockers seem off set at the rubber bush end....

you can see it leans over about 5 degrees, perhaps its bent not designed to be like that, but it does not look damaged.

I didn't notice before but one of my cats seems to have photo bombed me.......

so a busy weekend and as much done to the car as i could get away with......

the front suspension is finally bolted into the car, currently on 195 lb/in springs......we will see if they are OK.

I have also started to panel out the interior, but it is a slow job.........all in 6mm ply and later it will get a layer of fiberglass over the joins to weather proof the body tub......i have also made it as close fitting to the drive line as i could, the upshot of all that is the seating is 17" wide on the passenger side and just over 16" on the drivers side pretty good for an S1.

I have also tried to fit the rear suspension fully.......BUT it seems that when i bought new 13mm bolts to fit the shockers to the car i was given metric bolts and imperial nuts......not much use to me.

here is the rear of the seating area.....the shockers have still to be fitted but you can see how snug its going to be. once the boot section is fitted the boot molding almost touches the seat backs, its about 25 mm at the bottom and 1 or 2 mm at the top.

I have jacked the axle as high as it will go in the chassis and it does not foul the seating area anywhere, its close at the extremes........but it doesn't foul. Besides i don't think the shockers will allow that much movement so its not a problem.

Can I see a finishing line in the distance? Just coming into view :-)
