Apparently, anchoring works in more subtle ways too. There was a programme on the TV a year or so ago in which they did a simple experiment. They asked people to guess the value of a bottle of champagne, but before they did that they got them to pick a ball from a bucket and read the number on it. They did the test with two groups of random people but they changed the number on the balls so that one group turned up significantly higher numbers. The group with the higher numbers valued the champagne at almost double the price of the other group!
It seems that the brain is so lazy that it tries the first number that it finds 'lying around' and then goes from there, so if you plant the right number then you can get a different price. Amazing but true. We really are very simple animals.
