can you not weld it ??

I have welded it, with a hobby mig, steel wire and argon gas.

I am now manufacturing a replacement downpipe to fit a sierra manifold which has two outlets.

new wire, tips and gas waiting for me in the garage... i'm off to play.

never managed to weld cast iron successfully though Ade is a welder so if anyone can, he probably can.

Binned a capri 4 branch last year :-(

Mr Kerswell is the pro welder... I'm not.. I have a 50% win rate with my welder but flap discs do make stuff tidy afterwards.

I remember trying to stick weld a block some years ago, special rods and my finest oxford welding set. Heated up in an over for 24hrs, then welded, put back in the oven for another 12hrs then switched the oven off and left it to cool in the oven over the weekend. Still cracked right along the side of the weld. Oh and we had machined out the crack or so we thought.

Guess if I have to do that again I'll send it to mr Kerswell.

i,v got an oil filled oxford set that may be up for grabs,,,, its up at my old place (wonderland)  dont think the power supply will be good enough at the new place we moving to,,,,, not shure what they are worth these days ????????

ive successfully welded dozens of pinto exhaust manifolds over the years both with mig and stick,, allthough with stick you need some ,,bloody,, good rods ... the best i,ve found are called  NU-TECTIC  SUPA-CAST but at around £14 each there a bit expensive to have lying about getting damp,,

I sucessfully welded a cast iron base plate by heating the whole lot up in the oven before welding, the trick is to keep the job at a constant tempeature ( kin hot ) and then letting the job cool very slowly.    Early attempts with out heating, failed, as the job cooled down the item cracked again close to the weld.

the trick i did with transits and cortina,s was to weld them up in position,, then imediatly take them out for a ,,blast,, up and down the local by-pass then leave them to cool,, very rarely cracked again,,

last night i welded a shocker mount back on and that was cast no probs with mig i find that Argasheald gas is best and have you seen the picks of my cast bellhousing mod ????

thats how R.O.R make them steel pin mig welded in cast housing
