I had a spare gasket at home so it got swapped today and this is what i found.....

you can see the gasket is also failing at point 1 and it is going at 2 as well

on this picture you can see the gaps in the gasket face.....

car is back together and running again, good job it was a steel head....no damage.

well the plot just goes on and on last night i decided to find cubby holes for all my stuff in the new truck i have to drive and once the passenger side foot well was cleared i decided to walk round the truck and count the wheels..... and got locked out of the truck...in the rain.....and all my phones and keys inside......then i remembered that the sun roof was open. so i climbed up onto the roof with a bit of wire fixed to a broom handle to get to the door catch......not such an easy thing to do in the rain on a Daf 95 XF as they are about 12 foot high and they are not designed to be climbed. I managed and after 10-15 minutes and got the door to open and at that moment the glass sunroof shattered into a zillion bits.......

my thoughts were..thats not good followed by ...i have just cleaned out that cab!

ah well shit happens.....

when i got back to my car i drove into hull and went to the post office to pick my returned bank card and when i went to start my car it wouldn't turn over.......it turns out that the starter feed wire on the starter motor has broken off, it was easy to bump start the car, but yet another thing to go wrong.

Anyone interested in a lottery syndicate with me?

i wanted to run a straight edge over the head, but getting the car roadworthy was an issue for me, besides i think the problem was under torqued head bolts. the new gasket was tightened down in 3 stages at 30lb/ft , 50 and 85 lb then left to rest 30 minutes and re-torqued at 85lb the old head bolts weren't that tight.

thinking on....first on friday the clutch cable went then sat morning the head gasket, and for the third item, i am a Lloyd's bank customer and get AA cover with my current account, to prove it i had to show my debit card to the AA guy.....and he's still got it. :-(

Looks to be poor gasket but also shows all the signs that the head is not flat down the centre line. Our engine quality dept would reject any claim on that gasket.

I have heard of gasket failiure on tuned pintos and mine does rev very freely. it will rev very quickly to 7000+rpm........not a good idea on standard conrods i hear!

it didn't feel like the bolts were bottoming out.....didnt feel like it i also left the head for 30 minutes and re-checked the torque.

mine are 12 spline head bolts and dont need changing the torx bolts are stretch bolts and would need changing.
