Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Went and picked up a Phaeton from Big Vern (Cheers mate!) as a rebuild project. Its an S1 but has some S2 bits from the looks of it like the rear bodywork which has the bulges for spring hangers.

The plan is to strip it back to the bare chassis and then build it up from there, new bushes, calipers etc and a new engine just not sure what yet! It came with some goodies such as some Revolution wheels with yokos, a nice stainless exhaust and a new hood.

Looking forward to getting stuck in. Here's some pics, excuse the quality they're from my phone

A bit more progress on the drivers footwell

Metering unit to sort next now that I have got hold of a mounting rubber, looks like a boost hose will be running through the passenger footwell! Gonna have to put some sort of vent at the rear of the bonnet to duct some air at the filter

Did a bit today, had to do a service on the daily first and helped Lloyd trying to fix an immobiliser fault but then cracked on. Need to work out the mounting for the metering unit next so I can finish the bulkhead. Taking a fair amount of time for not much progress!

I havent welded a cross piece in yet as the passenger foot well has to be further back than the drivers because of the turbo outlet

Braved the cold and went down to the unit and did a bit today. Only a couple of photos as battery went flat

Worked out where I was going to start the drivers foot well and cut away half of the original bulkhead

Cut some bits of steel and welded in the box for the drivers foot well, have gained about an inch and half. Its not as close to the gearbox as it looks, there is at least 10mm and the clutch arm clears.

They are the only pictures I got but I worked out the passenger footwell and have cut all the bits to tie in to the gearbox rail and support the floor. Some more welding tuesday night I think.

I would be fairly confident in saying that the extra steel tubing i put into my car making a transmission tunnel saved Sandra and I from serious injury when we had our crash in August. Nothing rearward of the bulkhead moved, all the damage was confined to the front of the car.

Yes, going to fabricate new bulk head and trans tunnel hence why I said worst case I will just move the pedals back an inch so it clears the inlet. I put the standard one back in as I was planning to start building the new one around it

Ah I didn't realise that with the reliant setup, I was looking for one where the master cylinder mounted the other way. I think the problem with moving the pedal box is where the steering column fits through. I'll have to pop down at the weekend have a better look and take some photos

We're you not going to replace the plastic bulkhead and trans tunnel with fabricated ones?

Could you not move the whole pedal box to the right then bend the pedals to bring the pads back to where they are now?
Comment by Big Vern on January 3, 2013 at 21:32
There's quite some force applied to the pushrod due the leverage effect of the pedal, it's likely the pin and spacer would want to scew round. I think it prove problematic. The reliant pedal box has the m/c pointing back toward the driver rather than forward into the engine bay.
