When welding g alloy it gets a bit bright, we use marker pen either side, on ships I've seen people use French chalk, either side. You could try a lighter shade, I use 9 on steel, 10 or 11 on stainless and alloy. How close you put your nose helps, but it is called a dark art for a reason. Practice, practice, practice. You'll get the feel for it. :-)
I also did away with the standard Phaeton front hinge and made my own version (will take a picture when I get a chance) when the bonnet is shut there is very little movement now. Hope this helps.
Many thanks for the advice and support and hopefully the S2 will be fully finished and back on the road early 2020. Been a long time in the rebuild interrupted at times by a host of issues but nearly there . I've posted some photos but most importantly once again many thanks.

Lennard, I made my bonnet fit correctly all the way along the top chassis rails and around the scuttle. The complete procedure can be seen on page 8 of my rebuild post here :- http://www.godspeed.me/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1055&star...
