20/50 mineral oil.
NOT semisynthetic or fully synthetic.
With modern synthetic oils your car will leak and smoke really bad.

thanks dave. do you recomend a brand..

sorry no, but a good brand would probably give a better result with preventing tar build up....

I have had reasonable success with GTX the original one in a white can that says for older engines on it. Penrite would be the other one, availalable from many classic car places, thats about it I think for full mineral

If you're built a fresh engine then you'll just about get away with 15/50 semi. Dont ever be tempted to use fully synth as the oil aditives will eat all your cork gaskets - found that out the hard way :(

The problem for older engines like the xflo is the lack of ZDDP. ZDDP helped to keep valve train wear to aceptable limits but its use is now outlawed. Modern semi and fully synth oils are engineered to keep the wear rates low especially on modern tightly toleranced engines. The xflo is definitely not tightly toleranced and thus using modern oils will result in burning oil as Dave A. says. The friction modifiers also prevent 'running in' a new 'older type' engine properly.

Even with oils intended for older engines you shouldn't really have any problems with 'black death' so long as your engine runs at the proper operating teperatures and you change the oil regularly. Remember its usage not mileage that should dictate when you change yourr oil.

Hope that helps brian (that or your now totally confused :)

spot on big vern. no not confused. what a description......thankyou
