That argument is rather weak -  they are assuming that a modern kit will be safer. How do they know that it is? The whole point of using the old ID is to avoid an inspection, presumably because they know that it would not pass, so quite possibly it is NOT safe. With a 150bhp BMW straight six in it, it could be much more dangerous than the Dutton. Plus, being new, it will be more reliable, more used and will be around a lot longer.

If the old Dutton is not worth having then it should be scrapped, the new kit should be IVA'd, then everyone would be safer.

With a Dutton ID there is also the chance of getting a historic plate and avoiding road tax.

There might also be less stringent emissions requirements, which might matter if you were using an old engine or if you didn't want to compromise performance for emissions with a cat.

Although, in this instance, it's a Q registered in 1991 so tax exemption is a way off.

I still can't find a valid excuse for this, no one has come forward on PH in response to my post and to be honest I don't think they will.

I honestly believe this is just dodging the IVA fee or doubt in the builders mind that it will pass. Its priced too low to be profitable as the basic MK kit is over £3000 + donor cars (1 Dutton and 1 BMW)

Where has the actual Dutton gone, consigned to the landfill, total waste.

In this particular case I think the current owner has bought the car as is and when trying to MOT it has come unstuck. He just wants rid hence the low price.

I've never understood the whole dodging the IVA thing. The IVA legitimises the car and proves it has been built to, at least, the minimum acceptable standard. I do however see many on forum's complaining about the IVA fee, typically having spent as much on fancy wheels or something equally non-essential :( Plain fact if you can't afford the IVA then you can't afford to build a kit car and if you don't think your capable of building a car that could pass then why do you think it should be allowed on the road?
