I'm sure one of the clever ones will Brian.

As far as I'm aware the carbs only give you more air and fuel... getting more power is entirely down to the engine being able to burn that much mixture.

Optimum power is achieved by the right mixture being ignited and passed through the engine as fast and as efficiently as possible (or summat like that)

Single carb vs Multi-carb.  For engines of no more than 4 cylinders the maximum airflow occurs when the inlet valve of one cylinder is at or near full lift, at this point none of the other inlet valves are open, thus a correctly sized single carb should be capable of getting the job done. However the manifold it is attached to may be a compromise design such as those used on a moggie minor. The stock pinto twin choke manifold, by contrast, is very good so until you've modified the engine to outstrip the airflow of the carb you should be good. As Daryl points out there are gains to be had in terms of acceleration by using either twin carbs or a larger single carb with more total airflow, but you tend to loose both drivability and fuel economy. This may not be a concern for you on a 'hobby' car but for everyday use most of our driving is part throttle where drivability and economy are key

thankyou gentleman i am know enlightend . i am of course thinking about fitting twin webbers to my 1.6 crossflow. im off to newcastle tmz to pick up some spares, new wheels and a rear bumper and spare screen. i may put in a offer for the twin webbers and inlet manifold. he has. apparently they are set up for a 1.6 crossflow...so could be a nice buy...

are very good point graham. i know the bonnet would require a cut out as the melos they came off needed one..mmmm im torn would like the extra acceleration. but dont relish the idea of cutting my bonnet.  is that a chainsaw i can here reving up lol

lol. i thought so. may be a problem iv just looked on the guys e bay site and engine and carbs have gone lol.

gulp...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol... hes buying a melos daryl. lol

My Phaeton is beautiful. Ask anyone over here

Am I right in thinking the twin choke cross flow and pinto manifolds are of similar design (obviously reversed but basically similar)

The crossflo manifold is not bad just not as good as the pinto one, its more compact, less open and smaller.

A 2.0L pinto in lightening rod spec can top 130bhp with stock inlet manifold and carb, you wont get that kind of performance uplift with the xflo intake.

oh no. no chainsaw on my baby.. yes i prefer the grin factor too......

The westie in our little merry band runs 40's or 45's and has a smaller fuel tank that the Duttons... his range is about 50 miles less than mine with spirited footwork... I might also add his has been rolling road tuned and constantly fiddled with (in a good way) where i'm happy if it just starts...
