way back in my past I seem to recall this problem, but I cant think why or where, but, by pulling that tube off you have weakened the mixture, so you could be over fuelled. Then again, it could be timed wrong and when you pull the pipe it advances. I'll have to think ??????

The round object with the pipe is the fuel pressure regulator. It lowers the fuel pressure at small throttle openings and idle as the performance of the fuel injectors at very short pulse widths is poor. With it unplugged it will run rich hence the black plugs. I seem to remember a problem like this with my 2.0IS many years ago. I'm sure it had something to do with the idle speed valve your showing in the latest pic. I bodged it but sending an igh feed to one of the ISC terminals but never got to sort it properly.

thanks bv. can you explain why it runs ok with the thing disconnected ....new ground for me im afraid

Idle control valve - default setting is open therefore allowing air to bypass the throttle butterfly. If faulty or jammed closed then no air bypass on idle. Remove unit and clean thoroughly with brake cleaner. test by applying 12V across terminals. Check plug for correct polarity before test. 

My old 2.8 Granada had one which was forever playing up. £84 + postage new (intermotor)
