Why is it that I have never seen a Dutton Sierra on ebay whereas there's always at least one Phaeton on at any time that I look? I believe that there were nearly as many Sierras made as Phaetons so where are they?

Because they fetch such poor prices people just don't seem to bother these days.
Some must go to the mk1 escort boys who are always after tax exempt logbooks that still say escort.
They aere more likely to come up on the club classifieds than ebay.

So are Sierras any good as everyday transport? How heavy are they compared to an Escort? I am curious about them as maybe one of them would be a better option than my gas guzzling Omega. I really need some covered vehicle for winter driving as I have already proved that I can't use a motorbike everyday (I still have a tender lump on my leg from coming off last week).
havnt you got a heater, doors and hard/ soft top on your melos?, what wrong with using that, or improving it that so that it can be reliable during winter? it might cost you less than buying another car
As Ade says really, though loads of Sierra kits were sold there arn't that many left. They are popular with the MK1 and 2 Escort specialists as a good source of largely unmolested mechanical spares and often fetch more money parted out than as complete cars, though that could be said for almost any Dutton these days.
As they are/were 'cheap' many were not well looked after. Dave A's example and the one Ade has rescued being some of the better ones that you still see about.
My Sierra is a workhorse, tax exempt, cheap on insurance, everyday transport with a big boot.
It leaks, is drafty on the motorway, burns too much petrol, desparately needs a new interior (or any sort of interior really).
Even with a boat anchor for an engine it's lighter than an escort estate. Should theoretically be good for a ton plus but i'm way too chicken to try it.
One of the main reasons I rebuilt it was the awesome ground clearance. After getting the legerra 'beached' a couple of times last winter the Sierra is the answer. The lowest part of the chassis is 11 inches from the floor :-) Who needs axle stands?
Been out tonight in Sues Mondeo which managed very well at 30-40 in 2 inches of slush on the M56 M60 and M61. Bit of a surprise when I had to get out and shift 10 inches of snow to one side to get the car on the drive.
The Sierra has 10 inches of snow drifted onto the roof and the front of the green legerra is nowhere to be seen as it is just one big snow drift down the drive. Guess there will be some digging done tomorrow morning as we intend to make a snow creature in the back garden tomorrow. Now wheres the shovel... what do you mean its in the garden...
My Sierra weighs in at 787kg, the lightest mk2 Escort, the 1100 2door saloon was 875kg, i also use mine all year round and have done for the last 3-4 years as i dont have another car.
I take it that the sierra uses ford escort parts un modified then, i can see the attractiveness to classic ford breakers especially when a dutton Sierra is a lot cheaper than an escort to buy if you are after spares to sell on,
another reason might be because people tend to go for the sports car image of the pheaton or Melos, and so these are more likily to appear on gumtree and ebay, than a sierra, i must admit, if a sierra had come up at the same time i would have still opted for the melos.
