My Phaeton also busted the N/S engine mount and re-welding it didn't help much,,,i ended up adding a brace to stop it happening again

The lead in to the splines on the spigot shaft the new box did not have one it was a step so needed to be lined up carefully. must have taken us 3 hours, I used to change clutch on Fords in 40 minutes on my back for extra spends at the weekend. Mind you that was when I was in my 20's now at 56 it's like watching a turtle on it's back. But jobs done now. Tax her on 1st March.

What was stopping it?

No Ade, you can have that one back in the stores, I bought Sport box from GS Escorts on Thursday £25, I thought less pigging about then cutting the tunnel for the gear lever and changing the prop. This should have gone straight in HA! Myself Mr Heap and our apprentice sorted it in the end.

Is this the gearbox you got from me?

There may be a difference in the primary shafts Dave.

Well what a sodding day engine in, engine out, engine in, engine out, clutch off, clutch back on, micrometer out. we could find no reason for the engine and box not to mate up. We even took the box back out  to see if they would mate up and they did.The only difference between the old box and the new one is the leading to the splines on the spigot shaft the old one is chamfered, the new one is stepped so we had tried and tried with a jack under the box to take the weight, in the end it was down to the old ways get under grab the box by the scruff of it neck and feel for the splines, hey presto! it's done. another hour and she is running again, quick run up the road without the bonnet fitted, very sweet box positive gear change and no noise. I am a very happy bunny tonight.

Gearbox is back in and engine nearly in, bit of a struggle on your own. But reinforcements coming tomorrow Steve Heap and The apprentice our James. Should be running by Sunday tea.

I found the chassis plate on the engine mount broken off, so that answers the knocking noise under the bonnet.

Quick bit of welding and good as new (Well 30 years old).

Talking of age I have had Daisy Dutton 10 years on Thursday.
