Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

I finally got some time when it wasn't dark, cold or raining and when there wasn't something else that I was told was more important, so I have got my new wheels on the car. The wheels have an ET of 52,5mm, so I needed 60mm of spacers at the front to clear the front springs on lock. Of course one side had more clearance than the other. I only needed 48mm at the rear and the wheel do not fit to the bodywork the same on both sides.

On a local test run I haven't found any tramlines to see how they behave but I can confirm that I can still get the tail out on roundabouts, which is what matters!

Interesting looking car. More room inside and in the trunk than a Phaeton. lol, Never saw one of these and never will over here. I'll have to come across the pond to see yours.

My sons Fast Saab has Michelin wet semi winter tyres on his spare rims, and they actually say they have anti surf properties in the tread pattern !

Aquaplaning isnt down to diameter. its width of tyres and a lack of weight. 195's should be ok on the pinto james.

I've just sold the 17's. They fouled everything on mine, they were wide. That S4 I had had 17's but with spacers galore.

I think it looks good in the photos but I am now wondering whether 17" wheels would look better.

In the wet my B+ on 205s used to push on (understeer?) when entering roundabouts to quick, quickly swap to oversteer with a touch of power, all good fun if you knew it was coming !!

Ah, yes, I had forgotten the aquaplaning, that's something to look forward to! Although I don't tend to drive the car that fast on the motorway, normally 3000 rpm so about 65mph. At the moment the tyres are virtually new, so they have loads of tread on them (an ebay bargain).

Well that's a result then James, enjoy it before it rains, then you have to report back on aquaplaning etc. They look great on the leggie.

Well, I am rather disappointed - I have taken the car down the motorway and around rough roads and over speed bumps (you can't avoid them around here) and I haven't had any untoward behaviour, no tram-lining, no sharp shocks, nothing. The only difference is that the handling seems sharper, which was what I was after.

I have no doubt that the problems that you guys describe are very real for you in your cars but I am getting none of that, so far. I wonder why? All I can think of is that my suspension isn't polybushed and my dampers are set pretty soft.

I wanted to bring my Dutton up to modern standards because I bought a Hyundai coupe earlier this year and it goes around corners like it is on rails. I still don't think that the Legerra is quite up to that standard but it is definitely better than it was.

I feel sorry for your fillings.... I have 195/60/15's and can feel a matchstick under the tread @ 18psi.
