PS... sorry for the thread hijack Nick.
I think you're mate needs legal advice. he needs to be present when the car is inspected and have an mot tester or insurance assessor with him. Make a note of any damage to the vehicle caused while in the police compound too, don't ask if you can take photos, get the insurance assessor to do it. This way if any further damage is incurred while the vehicle is in police custody, make a point of telling them they will be held responsible. Do it as nicely as possible. If possible get the insurance assessor to have the rotor arm taken out so it can't be started too. Last thing you need is a two grey cell recovery monkey getting his hands on it.
I assume the Melos was legal and therefore fully entitled to be used on a public highway, they can't just have it crushed. Get onto the local chief constable, go directly to the top and don't take no for an answer. Be a pain in the arse until you get a result. Get onto the insurance company and get the car collected and delivered back to the owner or a suitable place of repair for assessment.
If it stays in a compound there's a chance it will get wrecked, have bits removed etc. The car still belongs to it's owner until the insurance has dealt with it. When all is said and done the car is still 'property' belonging to you're mate and if its processed in any way he's entitled to have his say.
I went through all of this with my legerra after the fire and the company who were storing it did so much damage, it even ended up on a scrap pile at one point.
I went into our local nick and reported the car stolen, kicked off with the local plod when they said they had had it removed and wouldnt budge until I got it back. Took twelve weeks and many phone calls to the manchester police. eventually they dropped all recovery and storage charges and let me have the remains back. What I got back wasn't recognisable as the same vehicle, the storage yard wasn't owned by the police, they were a breakers yard who let the police store things while they were being assessed. They have no respect for the owner of the cars at all, fair play if its just another tin top but if its a classic car (ALL dutton's are now officially classics) it should be treated with a little more respect.
non standard wheels?
its a kit car.......
the old bill are loonies.
Spanners has a spare bodyshell if I remember correctly.(Melos)
I hate to say it steve but i'd really be looking into the 'whiplash' caused by the impact of the surfboard... i mean VW
impounding the vehicle seems a bit heavy handed, as for the surf board how is the old bill to know what's ok for a kit car?.............my car had lost more than an inch on the chassis (about 3 inches i think) it'll straighten out.
Ouch, Is it just the wheel arch Nick or has it cracked the bonnet structure too?
