Derek,
When I looked at putting my mx5 diff etc into mine the main problem was upper wishbone. This would pass right through the upper chassis rail, right under the roll bar. If I could have come up with workable solution mine would have the mx5 diff, drive shafts etc (my 5 has an LSD so it was worth the effort to see if it would fit) also the mx5 track is quite a bit wider than the dutton so either surgery to the body (not an option on mine) or custom shortened drive shafts would have been needed.

You don't get sent for an IVA you just get your current identity/v5c withdrawn. You are then unable to use the vehicle on the road until it is registered which requires an IVA.
So long as the chassis is not modified then you can add to it what you like - only proviso is the chassis cannot extend beyond the 'footprint' of the car.
It seems a few people have got away with modifying their cars in the prohibited zone, but if the car is involved in a fatal accident then the driver could face manslaughter even if they weren't the cause of the accident, also if you haven't declared the mods to the insurance then you are driving without insurance!

I have given this some thought myself. whilst the car should go for IVA it needs “spotting“ as a recent mod when MOT‘d. historic mods are less fraught. the lower rear wishbones are along the lines i have thought of. the top wishbone isn't necessary if the dutton trailing arm is used with a rose joint at the hub end. better yet use a FWD hub and an “A“ frame lower wishbone retain the strut but with a shortened spring and connect the trackrod ends via tie bars to the chassis. similar in fact to the set up on fiat X1/9‘s.

I suspect this is a grey area

Has anyone heard of anyone actually being sent for an IVA for chassis mods?

If so what happened?

Yes Danny, I know of a few, they modified the original chassis - such mods are not now allowed without risking being sent for an IVA.

When I get my old photo's scanned and digitised I'll post an article on the work I did on trying to convert an old S3 chassis to Ford Sierra running gear.

Dave, that module does look neat but the upper chassis rail needs to be cut to accomodate the top wishbones and the cut needs to go close to where the roll bar goes so you lose the roll bar. Much extra work is required to put back in some suitable structure to mount a roll bar and seat belt mounts.

I spent at least a year on my Ford Sierra based project which used the whole rear subframe, it could have been made to work but was just too heavy.

Just thought it was neat and tidy and would not take a lot of work to get it to fit an S3

Sierra diff in a cage, looks tidy.

Found this on ebay last year, thought it would work well and not over the top weight wise
