Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

IMAG0299

So, collected last weekend and the first chance I get to go over it we have snow / hail / rain and gales... lovely if your a penguin I guess...

Q835XSC purchased from the factory in 1988, completed in 1990, stored for the winter in 1991 and there it sat for 22 years, possibly one of the saddest Legerras I have ever seen apart from my black one.

It was rough, body panels off, windscreen missing and a sorry case of 4 wheel drum brakes...

Today it got a wash, nothing special just caravan cleaner and a sponge but an improvement on fungus and moss...

IMAG0206

Hell of a job on here lads, starting with a body off chassis check, bushes and bolts and some refurb bits fresh from the sand blasting cabinet.

I will be posting more detail on Mr G's but major updates will be copied onto here too.

Best find out if it fits first though.

I'd go with polishing it, it's classic and beautiful. If he's got the moulds then could it be modified to say DUTTON maybe?

Will it fit a crossflow?. I had to machine the insides of this one on the pinto to clear the rockers, think it's still a bit close :-)

Little things...

Always fancied an alloy rocker cover but thought the prices on ebay a bit ridiculous, let alone shop prices. Spotted one a few weeks back which will suit the legerra so stuck it on my watch list. Thanks to a certain Mr L Hamilton and a few of his fellow drivers I missed the end of the auction. I asked the seller if he was going to re-list which he did and I won with no other bids. All good.

Rocker cover turned up today with a post it note attached...see below.

Adrian,

This was made in 1962 to go onto the 105E engine in my series II Lotus 7 which I built from a kit. Alas it was never fitted so I hope that at last it will go onto a Dutton.

I still have the pattern and core bux to make these castings which maybe of interest to the Dutton fraternity.

Best Regards.

Barry.

This is the casting as it arrived in the post.

So I took it round the unit and gave it a first stage clean, I've not finished yet but its a nice casting, very solid. Perfect to do something unique with. I feel quite privileged to be able to continue with Barry's work and install it into a Kit Car after 54 years. Not sure how I should finish it. It would polish up but everyone does that. It would also look good with crackle finish, different but would incur the wrath of Sue for baking it in the oven..

Anyway, first stage clean under way it looks more like this.

I'll post more photo's as it goes on..

It only remains to say thanks to Barry really, hope it meets with his approval when done.

I have another... could be done for comedy value :)

may have to use extreme language filter though...

That looks very good. I wouldn't have worried about the TIM logo. I might have wanted to rename the different regions to make it more performance orientated:

Poor -> Max Power,

Fair -> Moving,

Driving -> Cruising,

Idle -> Boring,

Decelerate -> Wimped Out

Little things.

Did a mini restoration on an old vacuum gauge that had been lurking in the 'to do' box. Bit of a test case to see if refurbing instruments was possible ...

Before

IMAG0088

and after...

IMAG0090

I need to work on blocking out unwanted details on the face of the dial as the TIM logo is still visible but generally quite pleased. Glass is also a bit spotty as it had been subject to grinder spatter... I used a black satin spray from the shop which has dried to a rough finish, like 120 grit, very odd as it was done in warm conditions and appeared to be smooth and glossy while wet. I kept the rest of the tin to match some of the others up with it... I seem to have a small collection of duff old instruments that I'm going to work through.

Still uncertain whether to use a fiesta mk3 dash pod on this one or separates.. I think they both look reasonable in Legerras.

DVLA nearly all sorted now, so close in fact I am going to accept what has been given and stop complaining.

XSC is now correctly listed as a 2 seater convertible, make Dutton....Legerra....

no model listed... evidently this cannot be altered by the DVLA (WTF) same as they can't check anything by VIN.... more

On another positive note, the diff is back from Geartorque and refitted to the axle housing, the back plates for the brakes are in the parts washer (don't use gunk without gloves boys and girls  ask me how I know) re-assembly has officially commenced. Every bush in the suspension will be poly, bright yellow poly... I will be needing to fit new bolts though, the old ones were too far gone to save. Still have to finish welding on the chassis and get it blasted though...

So, tiny update before work.

Postie has finally delivered my V5 for XSC...

Here is a small extract...

Vehicle details

  • Vehicle make DUTTOW LEGERRA

As you can imagine I am a little perplexed as to how this happened and will be on the phone to Swansea at 9am monday.

To add insult to injury its listed as body type coupe...not convertible

@ Steve -

@ Brian - yup, i'm still grinning. I knew I had one somewhere but this is in a Salisbury casing thats out of a Crapi so inches wider that the escort units.

This setup is using a 3.75:1 CWP set but the other axle casing has a pinion in it and there is a second crown wheel.

IMAG0029

IMAG0030I'm off to play with gearcalc to work out some theoretical speeds..
