I had a mondeo boot full of papers and cards to search through but still going...
Just a quick point to anyone who is in a similar situation to Chris. IF the vehicle is required for an inspection by the DVSA or VOSA it will need to be in one piece, running and hopefully ready for an MOT. Anything less will cause issues, basket cases are not 'presentable' and they don't like to be kept waiting once they have issued an appointment. Putting a car together with the bits you have should be possible without spending a shed load of cash.
Don't sit on a pile of parts waiting for something to happen as thats how people get frustrated, get stuck in, work with what you have, get it up and running even if some of the bits are old and tired, they can always be replaced afterwards.
