Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Hi, I am having problems with my starter. Even with a fully charged new battery the engine barely turns over. The engine is a hunter Hillman and I can not get to the starter. It is back behind the engine against the firewall.

Any suggestions?

Bad earth or dodgy connection or duff solenoid. ....or bite the bullet and replace the starter motor....:-(

The engine isnt too far advanced?

But most likely to be a failing starter motor. Have you tried putting a jump lead from the engine to the neg of the battery? that should see if its Stephens idea?

i would say clean up the earth then double check the battery to starter leads  is the solenoid  clicking? then it could be that, i wouldnt change the starter without getting it checked first , it would be silly to pull out the starter and get another if its just the solenoid .

Well here I am again. You guys must think I am a pain. After a few weeks the new starter started grinding and the car would not start. I unbolted it but I cannot get it out. If I turn it to the right it tightens into the hole and stops. If I turn it to the left it comes out about an inch then stops. Moving it to the right to remove it like I did with the old one it does not come out more than the inch when it is turned to the right. The old girl is starting to have lots of problems. I have fixed them all but this starter problem has me without clue how to get the new starter out. Any input would be appreciated.

Well I got it out using a pair of vice grips to twist it out. How do I test the starter to see if it is working? I hooked it up to a ground wire to the generator and bolted on the wire but no turnover. I also tried this with my old starter but again no turnover. Does this mean both starters are shot or is there a different method to hook them up to run?

not having the best of luck are you,  hook it up to the battery and earth out the casing of the starter, see if it turns, or if you have a local auto store, ask them to test it,  a starter shouldnt fail that soon, it seems to be the month for electrical gremlins,  your starter,  my ignition system, plus it took me 20 , yes 20 attempts and 6 hours  to get online tonight to get online,  ran a start up test, and what ever is ailing my laptop cant be fixed  using start up repair :(((((((  ade, i think you had better  get that hp model  in the post,

I sent a message to Ebay asking them to replace the new starter but it will probably take time so once again I'm stuck without a car for a while. I have been thinking about buying a motorcycle as a backup.

Well I ran the new starter. I had to turn the spindle to get it to the point where it would run. It ran for only a few seconds until it stopped. I turned the shaft and each time it would run for a few seconds. The motor sounded bad. It still made a grinding sound although not near as loud as when it was installed. The gears on the starter and the flywheel teeth I can see look fine. I think one of the bearings in the new starter are shot. It does not turn that smoothly when I manually turn the shaft. Sorry can not get my camera to put pictures on my new computer. I just seemed to be jinked lately.
