Made some more progress, got the engine on the stand, but not easy.  Electric hoist has gone dodgy, won't lift.  So had to use a hand winch with only a short cable, so had lift the block on to a plie of bricks and boxes, then lift again.  Will have to find the receipt for the electric hoist.

Steve, yes it has the bearing caps.  I was just using a very simple description for the block, by saying bare block, I was meaning no moving parts included.  So to be more accurate, it is block with bearing caps, cam followers and some minor barckets and engine mount bolts.  It would appear to be fitted with new core plugs, but for peace of mind I will change them anyway. .. Oh you got caught on the handbag comment, hope the dog liked your tea.

Stephen, it is just a bare block, but I have a new old stock reground (-0.10) crankshaft that I bought for £10.  Also all new bearings, rings, replacement pistons, etc.  Now have everything for the rebuild, just need the time.  Set myself a deadline of Christmas for the rebuild.  Like the handbag comment.

Collected a replacement Essex block today.  A quick visual inspection suggests it is better than my current block.  Inserting a piston in the bores and rotating confirms no oval-ness and the pistons feel like they fit better.  I will do a proper check once I have finished installing the electric engine hoist in the garage (I not lifting it by hand have only had a hernia op a few months ago)
