Dave, temporarily wired the starter today and it turned the engine over fine, so everything must line up OK.  Now time to move the engine from my trailer "test bed" and get fitted in the car.

Dave following your advice I rotated the sandwich plate about 90 degrees so it was well clear of the starter area.  Then the starter bolted up .  Just need test wire up the starter and check it cranks OK then I can chop up the plate to get it to fit

Wierd....my pinto is fitted on to a type 2 bell housing which I believe is the same as the type 3......it uses the pre engage starter........the sandwich plate has bee cut about where the starter motor fits . perhaps for the same reason.

I am assuming this is due to the bellhousing being a crossflow one.  Thoughts 1) buy a Pinto bellhousing 2) cut away the sandwich plate in that area and fasten the starter to the bellhousing holes and see if it works.  This is a photo of a Pinto engine and sandwhich plate fastened to a type 3 bellhousing, I don't know the origin other than type 3, so i guess crossflow otherwise it would have bolt in.  Should I cut out that area of the plate and see it will fit
