Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Time to take some advice from you guys, I am starting to repair the seating tub, where I have cut chunks out where the spring hangers used to be and where I have cut the trans tunnel down etc.

Is it chopped strand matting that I need and what sort of weight?   Never played with fibreglass before so is all a new learning curve.

don't worry about the weight, nothing in the seating area is structural, more important is to make sure the area you glass onto is clean. wash and clean the area very thoroughly soak in Acetone if possible before hand. fibreglass is easy to work with if you plan ahead. get in touch if you are stuck i have some experience now of glassing my car......

Buy a metal roller, best thing I ever got for doing matting, cheap enough on ebay.

Cellulose gun wash in a glass jar fitted with a metal mesh is good for brush, roller and finger cleaning.

The mesh should be shaped inside the jar to scrub the brush against to remove gel from the bristles but keep the handle out of the thinners. dry the brush by shaking before next use.

Always follow mixing instructions as it varies between suppliers.

always mix a little more than you need as you can always brush it over other areas or previous bits you have done, every little helps.

BIG scissors (not the wifes from the kitchen or sewing box) are good for trimming matting and for the odd nip/tuck that helps the mat to go round corners.

experiment on a flat area of kitchen foil over a board, make a flat square as a test before you start on the tub, get the mixture right.

Be prepared to use a heat gun on low setting to complete the curing process if working outside in this weather.

Aerosol lids make good mixing pots if you can get ones with no holes in.

If you want to mould fibreglass over something but need to release it after then kitchen foil is a good barrier providing you dont need a shiny smooth finish.
