Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Hi, I'm looking at buying a Phaeton S1 that has no windscreen.  Short of waiting until one turns up on Ebay, what do you do when you need to replace a screen?  Is it possible to have windscreen glass cut to shape?

I'm assuming I could make a frame (although tricky to bend the channel for the corners) but I have read somewhere that screen fitters only deal with CE marked glass made for modern vehicles.

Any experience?

Hi Mark,

You need to look for a plant glass company in your area, they will cut you a piece of glass to your pattern. It must be High impact windscreen quality glass and if cut right should also have the Kite mark in the corner. Mine was £40 and ready next day.

The screen surround can be made up possibly by the Plant glass company or someone they can recommend. Hope that helps

And I believe I have a pattern for the frame somewhere in my garage. Job done.

It is just aluminium U channel available from BnQ (I think its a similar thickness) and if not we will be able to find a supplier somewhere.

As for bending it to shape... the door frames can be panel beaten gently into shape. Make a ply template for the screen that is slightly thicker then the glass so the U channel is a tight fit. Start at one end and fit with one self tapping screw. First corner needs to be gently tapped and then clamped and tapped into shape, same theory for next corner. Trim to fit car. If you wanted a chrome one you could use copper, brass or nickel silver for the frame and then have it chromed after bending. Just a thought.

might be able to get a suplyer  from were i use to work as they are a fabrication shop but would need a windscreen suround for them to see if they can copy and bend them they can even prob do dutton wishbones with one to copy as they do the formula ford wishbones for there boss

i just use 6mm safety glass (laminated) and my last screen cost only £18 (18 months ago) i dont worry about he kite mark as its only really important for it to be there for an IVA.

If you want it marking, most places that cut the glass should be able to mark it with the relevant BS marking.  They have to when they supply safety glass for doors and windows in buildings.

Thanks for all the excellent replies.  It's great there is so much experience here, makes me think anything can be sorted!  I wish I had this level of response when I have work related technical queries from commercial companies.

Obviously a Dutton screen is a lot cheaper and easier to source than I thought it would be.

I'm new to (any) forums - I assume it's not always necessary to respond to each individual reply.

Dave it's a windscreen and should be high impact laminate, any good vehicle glazier will tell you that. Plant glass will shatter on both sides. but then it's only eyes that's in the way you could always risk one.
