I showed this to one or two of the lads at work and they all commented on the thin walls on the block. Guess thats why pinto's are so bloody heavy.

Astra engine - they do that - just look at how thin the casting is :-o No way is the block up to being turbo-d ro reved
Go on, weld it up and try again! Only make the cam belt a bit tighter next time, that'll hold it together.
I think that you need to examine the fracture to see if you can see where it started. Sometimes you can see the start point and see concentric ridges where it has grown. That is common when there was an original casting defect.
I don't suppose that there was a dropped valve in cylinder 2 or 3 and the impact of the piston was enough to finally finish the job off?
