the previous owner used bolts to secure exhaust manifold to the head. i managed to get 3 out easily having used loads wd40.
i cant get the bolt out on the 2nd branch, i have soaked the bolt in wd40 , applied blow torch and sill wont budge. the head of the bolt is right next to where the branches have been welded to the flange. cant get a socket on it , modified some ring spanners with the grinder , but no joy the spanners turn but the bolt does not
any thoughts on how i can get it out as the engine does not have exhaust manifold gaskets.
also noted that all my coolant has disappeared since last weekend, its bone dry
fitted a nice hydraulic clutch pipe , looks good and does the job well

Have you got straight line access to the bolt head to use a drill?
Also a bit of violence with a hammer can help! If you can send a shockwave down the bolt that can help to break the adhesion between the bolt and the head. If you can give it a whack while you are applying torque as well then that is best. You will probably need to use a spare bolt or something as a punch because you won't be able to get the hammer on directly. Be careful if you use a socket extension as a punch as you can ruin the end (I only did it once).
Have you worked out how the previous guy got it done up? Does it need a long socket? Or maybe a box spanner?
if james needs a hand to prise his wallet open i have an industrial spreader that might fit :)))))))
only way is to cut off the head ,then use mole grips ,dont try to bang a socket onto it, all that will happen is that you will sheer the bolt in the head, then have to drill it out and re tap ,
violence with a hammer, thats my department, and i have some very large hammers, for large spanners that fit large nuts, now, whos first??
Does anyone know what size/type thread the exhaust manifold studs are. The engine is 1600 x flow with sump at the front 681 block i think.
their unc 5/16? on my one i had unc bolts instead of studs, i dont know if its right or not, but it fits, normally it would be unc studs into block, but brass unf nuts on the stud ends
Thanks for the info , just ordered 5/16th studs/nuts
Just got myself a garage , no power but i will get a small genny or one of them inverter things. Poor dutton has no chance of starting in this weather even with a big plastic bag over it. looking forward to the shelter and warmth a garage can provide as i found myself taking short cuts to complete jobs due to poor weather. At least now i can take my time and do a better job :-)
