Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

This looks like a great site. I am having a problem. The engine is out of a Hillman Hunter. The engine idles just fine but when the gas pedal is pressed the engine dies.  I replaced the fuel pump but it did not help. I took the top off of the carb but it looks just fine. Any suggestions?

it shouldnt, the revs should rise then settle,  check your air cleaner,  the carb wont run without the air cleaner fitted  it looks like you have an air leak somewhere. the carb needs to have a vacuum in the body to work

turn the engine off, lift the pin, does it drop with a thud, its meant to, if it dies its running too weak, turn the mixture nut  at the bottom of the carb a 1/4 of a turn, see if it runs, if not remove the top, pull the needle and dash pot out check the rubber diafram.

There is a plastic plug on the bottom of of the fuel bowel but I do not see any adjustment screws down there. About a year ago that plug was leaking real bad so I had to wrap the plug in rubber tape.

at the bottom of the carb, there should be a round opening with a nut on it, thats the mixture assembly, you turn that nut  to weaken or enrich the mixture.  it should be right in the middle of the carb

I purchased a set of two carbs to replace the single stromburg but they were in to bad of shape to use. they have adjustments on the bottom but the stromburg just has that plastic cap

I suspected that there is an air leak somewhere but have not found it.

111231878225 EBay this is a twin 175 Kit for a triumph Stag, but you will need the know your carb type, I think the hunter had a single 175 carb though

Early stromberga had the adjustment down the centre of the dash pot, I believe you can still buy the tool. Replace the diapham anyway.

271342270879 EBay Strombergs carb adjusting tool £4.00 buy it now.
Loads of Strombergs bits and carbs available on EBay

Just checked on ebay all 3 types of tool available

Paul, the top of the carb has the oil cap on top. Is the adjustment down below the oil?

Yes unscrew the plastic cap, Put the tool down the centre and turn it soowly till it locates, Then you wind the needle up or down.1 tool is like a long alan key with a guide, the other looks much the same but on the end of the alen key is a different locateing peace, hope this helps.

If I need the tool I think I will have to get it over there in the UK, I do not think I will find it over here in Florida.
