Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Just been chatting/welding with the hill billies down the lane. Their hot rods are coming on a treat . They were commenting on all things "modified" and where do we go next. Even Zetec engines are now long in the tooth, Type 9 gearboxes are getting in short supply so pull a good price. Bike engined kits are great but fragile in the transmission area. Mazda MX5 wont last forever. BMW look like they will keep with RWD, but finding a cheap breaker for reliable use is hard. Electrics are a bit of a minefield nowadays and attract a premium price. How long before we get attacked on emissions? They say the IVA is written in stone, but already I have seen it modified. Historic vehicle stuff is under attack from various quangos. Do we hope to maintain a status quo ???

I hate computers in cars. They keep controlling more and more stuff. The engine, the brakes, the steering. I want to control all those things myself. It's just me and my Phaeton with no computers telling us what to do.

I don't like computers controlling the car however to say I didn't use computers in my cars would be an awful whopper.

Phone - speedo and external communications, video recording

GPS - not getting lost, speed monitoring.

Ipod - media control (through the stereo)

In the Ambulance I actually had a proper in car PC, pop out screen with rear monitor camera and all sorts of gadgets

Speaking of which, I still have three of those spare but they are very old tech, slower than my phone by a long way.

On the point of rare parts and rising prices. This is the basics of supply and demand. Currently the huge demand for classic / retro Ford parts is leading to crazy prices in the UK. This demand doesn't exist at crazy levels in other countries. I have recently been looking to Germany for parts, prices are way cheaper than the UK. Even bought some parts (inc. shipping) for a tenth of the UK price. Just need Google the name of the parts you need in a different language . Type 9 gearboxes seem cheap in South America, I am not sure the delivery would be cheap. May be the short term answer is to search outside the UK. I appreciate that this is only short term and at some point the supply will run out.

Good thought Dave,   "Hey, Gringo, you wanna buy my sister's gearbox? "

Steve, another country for cheap Ford stuff seems to be Spain

I spotted several Ford breakers in Portugal this year, sad I know, I may have to go back with a trailer. :-))

Want to split the driving Steve?

A colleague who has a Spartan was thinking of turning it back into a Mk2 Mexico by getting a body from South Africa - apparently they drive on the left. Bringing back complete Escorts from there might be more lucrative, but a bit of a drive!

James, that would be a " road trip" but who's Thelma and who's Louise ????

@Ade, that could be arranged :-)
