I will check but i'm sure its down to 'reputable manafacturers' and production of type approved replicas.

I'm sure someone at the DVLA can give me an answer.

Would be useful to know whether you're allowed to make an exact replica yourself or whether you have to commision one from a specialist. I can weld better than the herberts TDW used as I suspect can you, Are you coded ?

I can ask both the DVLA criminal investigation unit and someone at VOSA to see what they say but I think that common sense would say if you make one youirself don't get caught by making it obvious. It would have to be box not tube and very close to the original.

A coded welder:

Any 'home made' chassis would have to look exactly like the original and made from the same size RHS. If it looked in anyway different then its not an exact replacement and my understanding it would then need an IVA. There's nothing criminal in making a replacement chassis. If making a complete chassis was a criminal offence then surely modifying or replacing part of it should also be an offence?

Stretch limo's are covered by the same PSV laws as buses, Sue used to deal with the operators when she was in the 'buses' dept at VOSA.

They have to pass an even more stringent test than out IVA, still an IVA but different things are added to the test dependant on number of seats etc etc.

If you see one 'crabbing' get his number and report him. Funnily enough perspective can make a difference to how they appear to drive, its also very difficult to get one on a laser alignment jig...

the law is not dark on this subject but quite clear. No cutting, other than to repair to original, of the moncoque or chassis between a line drawn across the front of the front wheels to a line drawn across the rear of the rear wheels. IF the areas forward of the front wheels or behind the rear wheels are 'crash' structure then NO cutting, other than for repair to original, at all is acceptable and the vehicle would have to undergo an IVA - its what most of the swarking and sqeeling on THE ACE has been about.

New for 2012 was a section in the MOT - unacceptable modification. MOT testers are now supposedly instructed and trained to look out for mods to chassis or monocoque.

However like you say with kit cars especially older pre SVA types who is to know exactly what your particular chassis was like, just be careful not to build in stuff that wouldn't have been around back then:-o

Re :Coded welders, i dont know about the motor industry, but in my industry you are not allowed to do any structural welding unless you are "coded" and with in date. and even then there are very strict guidelines as to what can or cant be welded, we often have to have an item tested to find out the carbon element of the steel before starting to repair or build up the article with a suitable material ,  one problem being that because we have some parts that date back to 1930 or older  the steel can be a lot different than what you would get now.and no suitable welding rod or wire is made   

You know i cannot but feel this has all gone a little off topic. almost deserves its own thread.
