Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

I've just noticed a nice red 2 litre Legerra on sale, ebay item 290940616905. This car was sold in early December last year, I know because I made a bid on it and lost out with a bid of just over £1500. This was the car that got me interested in Duttons - I found my Melos just one day later with a buy-it-now of £900. Of course, that was just the start ... I would have saved myself a small fortune if I had secured that Legerra.

Daryl, have you noticed? It has got a hardtop, with a sunroof! How jealous does that make me?

That was originally put up for sale by a garage in wiltshire, just round the corner from the original builder, for over £2.5k.

Its been a slow and painful process watching the price drop to where it is now. Seems to have moved home a couple of times since the original sale too.

And now another one! ebay item 190863944644. This one is a 'project' with a 3litre V6 in it. DOC sticker. Looks like a nice car. I'm not sure about the colour but my colleagues would like me to have a pink one after the pink motor scooter that I used for a few weeks last year.

I thought these things were supposed to be uncommon, by my reckoning that s 5 on Ebay in recent weeks

They are uncommon, as far as I know he only built 180 ish in total. I can personally account for 3. We have had 66 recorded with the club since 1990 including all the ones on here and ebay makes 71.

I know of at least 5 unregistered ones and at least one of those is still 'in the crate' as it came from Dutton.

Once one appears on ebay it prompts people to try and sell others. This has been a bit of a spurt though these last few.

How would an unregistered one stand now with IVA issues?

Its the best one to start with as it has returned edges on all the body panels

I keep meaning to take mine into my local VOSA place and get them to give it a quick look over, never seem to get the time.

I have been watching ebay on and off since December and in those 7 months I have seen 7 Legerras come up for sale:

  1. the red 2.0 in December (and again now),
  2. the chromaflair (handbag colour) 2.0 that I bought in February,
  3. the pink V6 in March (and again now),
  4. the blue 1700 in May (twice),
  5. the white 2.0 that Daryl bought in May,
  6. the yellow 1600 in May,
  7. the orange 1300 in June.

Of those, Daryl's had a wrecked engine, mine had a hidden rust problem and the pink V6 is a project.

My Haynes "A-Z of Kit Cars" reckons that 120 were made. Now 23 years on, Ade only knows of 76. That's pretty rare.

And now another one ! and with a hard top too

and its mine all mine.......just a little issue of it being about 240 miles from home.......

Is mine the only one without a hardtop? It is certainly starting to feel that way.

Take small consolation James... mine has no hardtop. I don't want it to have a hard top. I do own a hard top but its on the spares car keeping the british weather out.

I will be exchanging spares cars with Ian at some point and if his has a hard top I will make sure you get first refusal on one of them.
