Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Ok , the 1600 e engine has given up the ghost, back firing misfiring and black smoke out of exhaust with lots of fuming. The engine has been temperamental for a while.

The engine is an early crossflow with hydraulic clutch, how will it all go together if I fit escort 1300/1600 that has starter on opposite side and cable clutch

Any advice welcomed

Hi Neil,

You should be able to use the early xflo flywheel and clutch on the later engine and the starter that goes with it. Should also bolt up to your existing bellhousing and hydro clutch actuation.

Sounds like the distributor could be giving trouble and maybe some fresh fuel might help.

We changed the dizzy today and its looking good , bit of wear in the shaft and gear wheel. The car was horrible , now she sounds good. Will probably buy a new dizzy and job finished once and for all. Neil

MK2 Cortina dizzy's (autolite ones) were prone to the top bearing wearing, its not actually a bearing, the shaft runs in the body without a bearing so they wear pretty quick. If you have access to a lathe you could machine the body and make a brass bush or just buy an electronic dizzy upgrade off 'flee bite'
