A few duttons I have came with a plate between the chassis and arb bush and some haven't. I have put the plate in and it compresses the bush a lot more now and turning is more positive.
You can see how one of the brackets holes have elongated without the plate fitted although it was done up tight.

Took it for a run with those bits of plate wedged in, tightened the clamps to the correct torque and, it does alter the feel, quite how and why I'm not sure, but it is a large improvement over the vagueness I had before. So on to make 2 longer plates with counterbores to cover the welds. Or as you rightly say they are further apart, could make new in-board brackets with new fixing holes. Jury is out.
IIRC the Sierra and Legerra chassis legs are further apart than the original ford fittings which is why the ARB bush deforms as it starts to bend with the ARB.
Think I may strip mine out and start from scratch, bother, if I didn't know it was there I wouldn't care, but now its looking at me, lurking, every time I look in the garage. Mine still don't look right, squashed and deformed, the ARB bushes I mean.
maybe old design? 20mm ARB on mine as the 22 was too stiff.
mine are floflex and split?? spect I got the cheapy ones
The ARB bushes I got from Flo Flex are solid, they don't have a gap, hell to slide onto a rusty ARB but no give at all when bolted up.
Nope, cannot find them in Escort manual, but they are mentioned in Haynes Capri manual which seems to cover all models. Ford cock up, slip a bit of metal in :-))
Is there any mention of them in the Haynes manual on Escorts?? anyway good spot Nick, why I didn't notice that I'll never know, I did torque the bolts up correctly, so expect they were bottomed out.
Makes you wonder if they were standard on the original ford and difficult to fit onto the dutton due to excess weld around the bolts. Would explain why all of the cars i've seen haven't had them.
