Just tested with a vertical image and it didn't ask me for any sizes so it must be the exif data on your images. Have you tried using a photo host like flickr and then using the html to embed the image in ning...?

every digital photo carries data with it and it might be affecting the results. Daryl had a similar issue with upside down photos a while back.

I think 'ning' is trying to make a wide shot into a standard size image and stretching it, try setting the dimensions to max width of 751 pixels and see what happens.

John, when you upload a photo do you try to set the image size?
