I understand your pain Steve. I wired in the tow bar on my Hyundai a couple of years ago and was very pleased when it all worked first time. However that was only 12 wires or so, and I had diagrams, and it took all day, and I had to keep checking what I had done because my memory is not as good as it used to be for these things. Plus some parts of the job need reading glasses and other parts don't. A horrible job.
But as BV says, hacking it might just make it even worse. At least now you think it might be right but if you chop it about then it will be a bu**er to get it back together if you find out that you need something that you've removed.
If it was me then I'd check what Pate Clayton's mate did.
I have a MK1 MX5 Steve and apart from the popup headlight motors, electric windows and the radio, what else is superfluous? I should have thought you would need the rest. Stripping the loom down often doomed a project when you spend months trying to get everything to work. Keep it simples
One of my mates has mk1 mx5 running gear and looms in his MEV, he's got some diagrams if they would help Steve?
It does look like a typical japanese loom, over complicated with too many split return wires. Separating the groups first could be the best way, concentrate on the engine loom first. Popping the wires out of the loom plugs one at a time, separating them and then cable tying them back takes forever but it's the only way to thin it out.
I had issues with my old bluebird back in the early 90's, had to strip and re-do the entire engine bay loom, too many 'joiners' in the battery supply wires. Don't know if the Mazda loom is the same but i'm guessing there are duplicated wires for some functions in there or they've just gone the 'long way round' on everything.
trouble being Ade, I make some progress, then lose confidence in my own work. impossible to understand why some wires go and split to relays and some go straight where I want. Change of plan could be thought of. Thinking of removing all the lighting and indicator stuff and all the dash loom.
One wire at a time Steve. Have you identified and removed the bits you don't need?
hoping for mottled stainless, but that is n my mates hands. Or his bosses stock at present
looking classy
