Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

The rear suspension looks a little high to me but it is 40mm higher on the other side where the spring has been replaced. I expect that it'll be a bit lower when I'm on board though.

I suppose that I should put new coil-overs on my todo list. I wonder if I could do a temporary bodge by making a spacer to 'lengthen' the spring by 20mm which would raise the car by 30mm or so. I would have to disassemble the coil-over to do that, so while I was at it I could also work out the spring rate from the free length.

Any chance of doing an in depth explanation at some point, on this subject BV ? . perhaps do it as a new post for referance,  in the technical section on Mr G's site.  Id like to know a little more about it.

Dave we've been here before, with the different motion ratio of the later car the 300lb/inch spring works out the same wheel rate that you have on you're car, just the spring rates are different because the leverages are different. You have to stop thinking about spring rate and concentrate on the wheel rate!

I would say the twitchy feel to my car prior to the rebuild was down to lousy and different side to side geometry.

300lb/in springs on those loadings would be like having no suspension at all......

There's your problem 6inch is an inch too short I believe

I can't see a part number on the coil-overs but they are Konis, one of the logos is intact. The springs are 6" long and have 10 turns. They are 0.3" thick wire and 2.2" outside diameter (so 1.6" internal) according to my verniers. I have previously measured the weight as 166Kg on the nearside and 158Kg on the offside (my engine is not central), but that includes the unsprung weight. I would guess that the total unsprung weight is about 35Kg (the wheel is 18Kg, the brakes disc, caliper & pads are 7.4Kg) so I have about 130Kg sprung on the nearside. Measuring the geometry of my front suspension, I think that spring load is 145% of this, so 189Kg.

You don't really want too much squat and dive with such small suspension travel. Twitchy is more likely to be down to the geometry. A little more toe in and more castor, and decent grippy tyres.
