Morning Dave, well that's not really round the corner, all of 200 miles! Thanks for offer, i just got new cam bearings pressed in and honed last weekend. all the bottom end is new too. I am looking for timing gears (steel), fast road cam and unleaded heads. I'm also going to go for the double 38DGAS inlet manifold. hoping will be 180BHP. whats the plan for yours?
John, I am in Preston, Lancashire. Thanks for the offer of the parts, I seem to have lots and lots of mine own spares, I have 3 inlet manifolds and 2 dizzys plus lots of junk. Do you need any parts, I have some std mains and cam bearings going spare (both NOS), may have some std big ends (not sure)
Big Vern, thanks for the very precise information. Very useful. many thanks
Dave, not sure what part of the world your in but if near me I have used a company called Buntigford Engine services and he is mustard when it come to these blocks. I'm currently in the middle of rebuild too? Have spare inlet manifold and distributor if helps.
Pistons listed in the AE catalogue 19298 Zodiac/Capri 2994cc up to '71 = 8.9:1CR 19131 Granada/Capri 2994cc '72on = 8.9:1CR but different part numbers though dimensionally the same. 20108 Transit V4 1996cc '66-'76 = 8:1CR Note: can be used in V6 as low compression piston.
Powermax piston 19300/KR All 2.0L V4 and 3.0L V6 '66-'76 = 9.75:1CR has shallower dish.
2.0/3.0 pistons = 95mm overall length 1.7/2.5 pistons = 101mm overall length.
Piston on the right will be the better pistons if you can use them.
Found the answer. The pistons with the sloping crown shoulders are pre 1971 pistons, post 1971 pistons had the straight crown shoulders. As it was Fathers Day we had trip to the Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland today, there I bought an old copy of Retro Cars which had and Essex tuning feature, got home and read the feature. Problem solved. Picture should be below
Do you have a part number on the underside of the piston? I'll try and dig out my piston catalogues 2morro and have a look.
Checked the piston size against the information in my Haynes MK4 Zodiac workshop manual, it says 3.0l pistons are approx 95mm long (I can't remember the exact at moment) and 2.5l are approx 100mm (again can't remember the figure). All the pistons I have (18 of them) are approx 95mm long. Two sets are the same, itis just the set out of the old block that appear to have a slightly narrower crown at the top, therefore appearing to have more "scooped" out. The crank is a new old stock reground -10 thou crank. It seems find with new -10 thou mains that I have just fitted. I still think the old block must have low compression pistons. Before removing them and measuring them, I thought they were 2.5l ones, but having neasured the length they can't be.
Another thing that occurs to me with the crank, have you checked the journal diameters, it was not unusual for cranks to be supplied new at first undersize due to crank grinding problems on the production line.
