I have decided that cutting down the clutch pivot point post is the way forward. I can always replace the front cover if it goes wrong. The pivot post is a sort of threaded collar projection, see image

Exactly Paul, you converted the fwd flywheel to take the rwd clutch so you could use a rwd gearbox. Dave is trying to fit an rx8 gearbox to a pinto, and this requires some engineering to make work. I gave up trying to fit an mx5 gearbox to a pinto since I found it cheaper to buy and mx5 engine to fit on the gearbox.

On my 1800 Zetec to type 9,  I used the original zetec flywheel re drilled and doweled to take 2.0l pinto clutch, disc and bearing also used the Pinto clutch fork.

Dave, Mondeo are 210mm or 220mm, the 215mm clutches are all rwd and will be too deep. You have to use the pressure plate and friction disc that goes together as they are designed to work together (the fwd clutches are 'low lift' and 'slim') You can use a 220mm mondeo clutch complete but you'll need to get the flywheel re-drilled.

The RX8 engages perfectly with the spigot in the crank. I just need a thinner pressure plate. The PCD was very similar with the 1.8 Escort clutch that was a 210mm plate, if it had been 5mm wider it would have been a perfect fit. That is why a think a 215mm Mondeo one from the same era may fit. I have ordered one, if it doesn't fit I just send it back.

Ford front drive and rear drive clutches are not interchangeable. They use different bolt/dowel pcd's for the pressure plate and the front drive clutches are thinner low lift types so FMC could reduce the bellhousing depth on front drive cars. To use a front drive clutch you'll need to get the flywheel re-drilled to take the front drive pressure plate. How does the RX8 first motion shaft engage in the back of the crank? When I tried to do this with the similar mx5 gearbox the FMS was too short.

Steve, my guess was slightly out.  The Escort is a 210mm diameter, I need 215mm.  It looked close until I got it off and lined them up.  MK2 1.6 Mondeo has 215mm clutch>  I am trying to find an answer rather than chopping bits of the pivot point.

Good luck Dave, hope you're keeping records of the hybrid parts. You are now the man :-))

I may have found the answer. The Zetec I have is from a MK 7 Escort 1998, appears to have a pressure plate that is much thinner than my pinto ones and have the same fixing PCD. Just need to get it off to verify, but it is well rusted up, much soaking and then it can check.

Just check the 1.8 Escort Zetec engine I have. That measures approx 83mm for block to clutch fingers. Looks like this 12mm is the issue
