Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

End of another glorious day, pleased to report all welding finished with no mishaps. Chassis all altered and stiffened, even got some paint on, if I was allowed I'd sit back and have a beer, but a cup of tea will have to do :-{

Tired old crossflow, leaky four speed box Plus 3.7 ish diff, complete with sawdust additive, it'll go a lot faster, but being hiked up in the air, it doesn't have a confident foot print on the road, sort of skitters about at 70. Work in progress to tighten the thing up. Feels better on 195/60 x 15 on the steels then on the 235/50 x15 of the alloys

Mine has a rev limiter... my right foot.

I'm sure it has a 4.44:1 diff as it was never fast but bloody quick away from the lights, 30mph in 4th is comfortable unlike the Legerra which has the 3.89:1 fitted.

Ade, I got 91mph (gps) out of my Rickman with a similar engine and box - it was pretty much the same in 4th or 5th gear. The Ranger is heavier and I would guess that it has worse aerodynamics. I am running 195/60x15's (which are a bit smaller) and a 4.125:1 rear axle. I changed the axle to improve the motorway performance.

I'd have thought that a Dutton Sierra should have a similar top speed to a Mk1 Escort, which was more than 80mph for the 1300. I reckon that it should be able to climb most motorway gradients at 65mph or more, if it has the 4.23:1 diff.

I maxed out at 83mph (GPS not speedo) on 225/60/15 road tyres, plenty of RPM left but just not enough BHP.

As to the floating thing, accidentally tried it last winter in the heavy rains, failed, splash wave over the bonnet but it kept running and got me out the other side. Narrow lane, big dip, thought it was level road in the dark... turned out to be water over 2ft deep.

I'm actually starting to get a bit of confidence in the Sierra now, plus I'm in the RAC recovery :-)) not afraid to set out on a trip to Bude (80 mile round trip). Exeter on the main drag is just that, a bit of a drag 50-60 OK ish, 70??? your having a laugh. I can hold up caravans :-))

with them "mahooosive" tyres, it probably would float.

I have been promised access to the VOSA weighbridge next time I have a day off so I can get a certificate of GVW, probably a bit heavier than yours though with a pinto, type 9 and them mahoosive lumps of rubber on the corners.

no, just a 4x2 box section in behind the cover, I drilled and tapped M10 further apart, you can just see the bolt in centre of step. I filled in where the tow bar bolts went. Don't think I could tow much with this...............legally :-))

Steve, have you got a 1" tube welded centrally on the top of the back bumper?

I've got the bumper cover with the step in, only held on by the tow bar bolts. Its got a bit of a tube 'stump' in the middle, can't work out what it was for.
