So, MOT sorted by the skin of its teeth, loads to do before tomorrow morning, panic has set it due to a little mishap with the pedal box...

How many of you fitted metal spreader plates between the pedal box and the bulkhead? Here is something for those of you with pinto engines to think about.

I didn't see this coming 8 years ago when I re built it... The holes are supposed to be there... the crack around the edge is not.

Seems the proximity to the manifold has weakened the fibreglass of the tub a little

Well a lot actually :)

A metal spreader plate on the inside would have eased the load on the area and this may not have been quite so severe. This is going to be a fun evening..

Ade, using my eye in the sky, I spy a blue leggie. Great looking unit Ade, get yourself a wood burner and, um, borrow a pallet or two.

@ Steve, Hahaha... you should see whats hiding to the left of the Sierra, the other side of a small skip....

@ Graham, wheels were an ebay bargain and I made the center discs but I havent finished them yet. Exhaust was stupidly expensive but it's stainless and fully functional, so I'm never going to have to buy another one.

@ Daryl, there are valid technical reasons for downsizing to 14 x 6 and they were cheaper than buying one new tyre for the 15's

Ere! Someone's abandoned a ropey old Sierra opposite you Ade. :-))

The Green one has been round in the unit for two weeks now, the first time it has ever been stored indoors since I restored it. I've had a bit of a dabble with the buffer and that polish and it now looks a little 'greener' and less bleached, there are still some bits that need doing over, mainly the bonnet which is badly warped and could do with replacement.

Here's the evidence...

IMAG0643The more observant of you may notice another little alteration. I'll do another post when I finish the engineering side of those.

While I have been polishing I have found a lot more scratches, cracks and chips that I remember. A few of them round the wheel arches have completely removed the gel coat so I can see that paint in the garage getting used next winter. I've only run the buffer over it three times and this new polish is certainly easier to use, but needs more water as it dries faster. This has a slight side effect in the amount of spray thats produced. If that dries then it is a git to get off.

Roof has deteriorated more, passenger side is split badly. Because I have the roll bar cover on the roof needs to be larger in nearly every dimension, the bit above the windscreen gutter at the ends is just loose and very leaky. I think this is the first time the inside has been dry in the last three years.

I was at least 8 feet inside the garage just now and got blasted when a hail storm suddenly dumped on me horizontally, so yes you will get it :-))

Just been and shifted enough crap in the car port to actually get 3/4 of the legerra under the cover. Now if it snows, watch the wind blow the snow under the carport and bury the car and garage in one go

i'll bolt mine back up with the spacers, saves dropping the hub off the car

I've had to weld mine on the Sierra, no big deal. I found it best to weld them up with a wheel firmly attached, keeps the stud nice and square.

I also found out one of my front wheel studs has parted company with the hub, not confidence inspiring when I think how much stick this old girl gets from time to time. Looks as if the splines have gone as its not locking in the hole as it should, might have to get the stick welder out and tack it in until I can replace the hubs :(

Well it didn't need 200 miles to work out there is something amiss with 5th. all the other gears seem fine so I am assuming that 5th is dry, thats what it sounds like anyway. I know its fed by an internal pump that doesn't like normal gear oil as its too thick so a gearbox oil change seems the first step to attempt. I know someone had a pump that could be used to syphon as well as fill, anyone going to own up, tell me what it is? Failing that its back to the very messy 100ml syringe which takes bloody ages to do on the Sierra...or a trip to ATS to see if they have one...
