"And the NUMPTY of the Year AWARD goes to"

ME!!!

This morning called at a race car engine tuners at Barnetby Dennis Vessy's who told me what the problem could be with the poor idling, and sold me a couple of new diapham's.

I got home tonight took the carb a part, cleaned every jet, found the problem was an O ring on the Idle jet fitted in the side of the carb. It had gone hard and split so leaking air. According to the book and the jets the carb is off a 1600 GT Capri.

Anyway built it back up refitted it, and after a bit of tweeking it now idles well, so decided to give it a blast, but first to the garage a put some fuel in. Leave the garage blitz up the road, first bend and she starts to missfire, and is very difficult to keep running. We limp back home and as I pull into the street there are cloud of blue smoke. She will not tick over but does start with lots of smoke. ( Have you spotted the deliberate mistake yet?). I could not believeI had done it, but YES I have put DIESEL in her, don't ask, I don't know why,we even went back to the garage to confirm it.

So out with the tank, and the jerry can's, managed to spill a couple of litre all over the drive and our James' shoes. Found that the fuel gauge is also a waste of time as there was nearly 25 Litre's in the tank, I only put £10 worth in about 8 1/2 litre so not to happy about wasting the fuel, but if I leave it to stand for a week the diesel should settle out, and I can syphon off the petrol.

SAY it loud I am the NUMPTY of the year, unless you can top that.

petrol in a diesel works as well so long as you mix it at about 1gal/tankfull best to do it in winter but so long as your not towing and not in the habit of thrashing it, it should be fine.

No the RAV is diesel, and believe it or not I have done this before. Going to Germany through Hull I had a VW Sharan and filled that up at the last petrol station before the Humber Bridge, this time 25 litres of petrol into a diesel. That was 13:00 pm Ferry at 18:00pm cost me £80 plus I had to leave the fuel behind. You'd think I'd learn...

Is the Rav a petrol too?
If you put it in a diesel you could use it a lot quicker... Obviously it would still have to be mixed though.

Thanks Dave that answers my question of tonight. Saddens my heart to see 25 litres of mix sitting there at £1.21 a sodding litre. Oh well it will do for engine washing and starting BBQ (Only joking).
Clean fuel put in, filters cleaned, would she start, would she heck. But once connected to life support RAV4 with jump leads, took about 10 minutes to clear the carb jets and fire into life. runs a treat now, took it for blast and it performed well.
Right bring on the Lakes.

diesel wont settle out, i think it will fully mix with the petrol and stay that way. you will be able to use it by adding it to full tanks of petrol a little at a time.

Still doesn't beat the 2 1/2 litres of water I got out of my tank Dave.... but then I didn't put the water in...:-)
