Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Went and picked up a Phaeton from Big Vern (Cheers mate!) as a rebuild project. Its an S1 but has some S2 bits from the looks of it like the rear bodywork which has the bulges for spring hangers.

The plan is to strip it back to the bare chassis and then build it up from there, new bushes, calipers etc and a new engine just not sure what yet! It came with some goodies such as some Revolution wheels with yokos, a nice stainless exhaust and a new hood.

Looking forward to getting stuck in. Here's some pics, excuse the quality they're from my phone

I don't know of any others. The turbo'd lump can be quite easily tuned for more power, plenty of spares about and relatively cheap. I liked the idea of doing something a bit different

Martin, i've had a Melos with a 2.0 pinto and a Phaeton with a 2.0 straight six Triumph. I wanted something more revvy and with more power, it was either going to be a 16v or a turbo. The engine came up cheap, seemed a compact little unit, would bolt up to a type 9 and was a bit unusual

could it be that the RS turbo engine is a CVH?

just my guess Martin....;-)

James, the unit is about £250 a month plus electricity, I give Lloyd £50 a month towards it. The only down side is its about 20 miles from my house so I can't just nip out in the evening and do a bit.

The engine is a 1.6 CVH Turbo out of a Series 1 Escort RS Turbo. I found it for sale on another forum I use and managed to get it with the loom and ancillaries for £200 but the turbo has some play and needs a rebuild. The fiesta that the engine was taken out of made 120bhp at the wheels with this engine. In total at the moment i've spent £800 including buying the car.

I am very jealous of your unit, it looks brilliant, I would love to have a place like that to work on my car. I expect that it costs you and your mate a lot to have it.

So what engine did you end up with? A comment mentioned CVH, which suggests Escort to me. What size? What power is it meant to be? Where did it come from? Did you stick to your original £200 budget for the engine?

Its an old MFI set up, there is a fuel ecu and engine ecu, it does have quite a few sensors I sorted the engine loom out last week

As I understand it as the flap under the filter moves down it fires the fuel to the injectors. I think there is a vacuum from the inlet manifold that goes to it the metering head

A bit of progress there Mr Clayton, looking good sir. Never having worked on one of those engines, how is the metering unit controlled/powered ?

Thanks for the comments Stephen, was beginning to wonder if anyone read any of the updates! The weber sticking in to the dash made me laugh

Some good progress today. Last time I was at the unit I cut out what I had done of the passenger footwell as I decided to change it. I'd also decided to make a tray for the battery, this is how i'd left it

Todays progress, welding will all be finished before chassis gets painted

Think i'm going to need something like an early Impreza scoop on the bonnet to get the air to this filter under here!

Keep plugging away when I have a few minutes. Metering head now mounted which is a good job done, had been scratching my head about how was best. Its nice and solid and uses the original rubber mounts to keep vibrations down. You'll have to excuse the rubbish pics from my phone, still to be fully welded up.
