Engine problems

This looks like a great site. I am having a problem. The engine is out of a Hillman Hunter. The engine idles just fine but when the gas pedal is pressed the engine dies.  I replaced the fuel pump but it did not help. I took the top off of the carb but it looks just fine. Any suggestions?

Well I took her out to the grocery store today and she ran just fine. It's kind of disconcerting not knowing what exactly the problem was. I want to thank you guys for all the information you supplied.

Yes, it is irritating when you don't know what was wrong as you can never be sure that it is not going to come back again. It is much better if you think that you know what you did. Still, it is nice to be able to enjoy it again.

I have had the old girl 9 years and this is the first time I have really had a problem so I can't complain.
