Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

Does anyone know how to replace the seal on the primary piston? The master cylinder is Girling 74660038 and the repair kit only came with seals, not a whole piston assembly. It seems to me that it is impossible to get the spring off the piston so there is no way that the seal can get into its position with the whole thing in place. The spring seems to be completely captive, goodness knows how it was assembled.

You will see from the picture that I managed to get the old seal off - it broke quite easily!

i think its a push and twist to unhook the spring, my mate graham has just done one on his mk 3  cortina ill see if he can post...

Mine was different,
The spring and piston are separate on a mk3 cortina.
As the piston is cast and the spring is made of spring steel they must have been manufactured separately.
Which means that if they went together they must come apart.
What car is the master cylinder off.

its the same as mine, inside the spring is a rod with a allen headed screw, undo this and the spring will come away

Also, the   seal goes on, then the cap  goes on over part of the seal if i remember correctly

Its nice to get something right  , it dont happen very often

glad to have been of help Steve,

but one thing i have to say is , this,  dont always go by what the pictures show, thats not a  Capri master cylinder , and if James tried to twist, or prise off the cap, without undoing the spring holding piston, he will effectivly ruin the piston, and you can not get replacement spring and cap assemblies

Thanks guys. Allen screw it was. It was so tight that I thought that the allen key would snap, but it is done now. I had looked down the tube but I couldn't see the head and I'd never have found it. Cheers!

I have no idea what car it was from but others online seem to think it was used on the RS2000, Mk1 & Mk2 apparently.

i believe it may be a granada m/c  the only disgram i could find when i did mine was a granada mk 2  some Capri's used it, but on most sites it showed the escort one which is different   with fords its a minefield with so many types used , i googled the part number on the body, thats how i found out  how to strip mine , i had the same issues , seals not holding presure ,so i had to rebuild mine  strangly my bore was perfect  but i did cheat, i took mine into where i worked  gave it to the machinist,he put  it into a  lathe and honed it with an expanding  honer, it cleaned it up like new,  if it hadnt, we were going to  machine it out, turn a sleeve and freeze it in  thats the  advantages to having a machine shop you can get help and advice from :))
