Dutton Kit Cars and their owners

The car arrived yesterday after a bit of hassle getting it moved from Scotland. It looks solid and a good base for a project but as usual there is more work to do than originally planned.

The main jobs are, the brakes need freeing off, hardly any of the electrics are working, pedal box needs bracing as it flexes horribly, track control arm to replace, rear wheel bearing, cooling system to look at and fan to fit. The front bodywork has some bad cracks that need repairing. On the good side, i've had it running and it sounds sweet and I moved it in to the unit under its own power.

There's enough room to do it after I trimmed it the other week

was just a thought......perhaps previous use had done the damage already?

I think there may have been because I thought the rotor arm could rotate quite a bit when I fitted a new one but the hall sender clip jamming the dizzy finished it off

New dizzy fitted this afternoon and it started first turn of the key. Hopefully go out for a play tomorrow :)

Took the car out for a run down some of my favourite back roads today, it was running really well.I need to tale the rear axle out to sort an oil leak. I thought it was one of the seals but looks like it may be the casing. Needs an oil change anyway as I didn't realise the LSD needed a different oil.

Last night got the diff sorted. Sucked out all of the old oil and repaired a pin prick hole in the axle casing at the back of the diff and refilled with proper LSD oil. Hopefully that will be the leak sorted and clanging from the diff solved now it has the correct oil. We also sorted the headlight wiring as they'd been connected the wrong way round, on dipped the main beam warning light was on. Just need to have a look at the exhaust as it keeps coming off where it joins the manifold and then i'm ready for Castle Combe.

Good progress, Pete. Let's all hope that the weather is kind for us over the weekend.

The car behaved faultlessly over the 280 mile round trip to Castle Combe and back. I didn't take it on the track apart from the parade lap as I was still worried about noises from the diff. I have done some research and asked on a few forums and have come to the conclusion it is a plate diff. I have been assured the noises and symptoms I have described are all normal, I'm going to ignore it unless it causes any more problems.

The next work on the car is to get the digital dash and temp gauge fitted, new steering rack gaiters fitted and tracking done. I'm not going to have much time until the beginning of August as i've got weekends planned seeing mates and my brothers stag do. The plan when I have time is to get it on the rolling road for a power run to see how healthy the engine is (it certainly feels strong) and then I want to do a run what ya brung at Santa Pod and a trackday.

it wont just be your brothers stag do soon :-) you want to get a ring on that one asap.....willing to ruin her hair do to drive across country to a multi club gathering  deffo a catch.....

Where's her Labrador then? :-)

p.s. I am glad the car held up so well for you.......you decided on a paint scheme yet?

One thing at a time! Accepted an offer on my house on friday so we are now house hunting again.

Haven't decided on the colour scheme for the car yet but it will be something suitably bright!

So, recent updates! The house sale fell through, I got engaged to Emma and I'm planning on getting back in to Karting and racing in a sprint series next year (her idea, I used to race when I was younger). I've used the car several times and have made a plate up to cover the hole above the pedals attached by rivnuts so its removable.

Unfortunately the car is going to be for sale soon so I have some money to invest in the racing. If anyone is interested drop me a PM.

Congratulations on the engagement. Emma seemed lovely when I met her at Castle Combe and if she is encouraging you to do the karting then that is brilliant. I'm sure that you will be very happy. Bit of a pity to lose the Dutton though.
