Thought I'd start a new post for this.
I have been looking to buy a Tig for while now, and have had three different models on trial in the workshop. I need to extend my services to include welding on Aluminium and Stainless steel.
The machines I tried ranged in price from £199.00 up to £3400.00
From the result of the trials, I have settled on a mid range 200amp AC/DC machine, with foot pedal (an absolute must) and using pure Argon shielding gas, the Argonsheild Light that I use on my Mig welders didn't work very well.
Cost £1800.00 including the cost of another the gas bottle hire charge from BOC (looking at other options on that one) :-( Still saving !! But, the trials proved that using the cheaper machines would not provide the quality I need or be reliable.

do you know i did a search in blogs and the forum for this post and "tig welders" was a search term (checked the computers history) and still couldn't find it........
this is the TIG welder i just bought......it came with a full gas bottle (the blue one in the back ground) it is about 6 feet tall and is not liable for rent.......
also got a torch new earth lead, spare gas shield with gas lens and two tungsten's along with a pack of cutting discs (1mm thick) new welding gloves welding mask (basic but ok) a selection of stainless weld filler sticks (1mm thick) a pack of flap discs (5) and an adaptor to use the TIG as an ARC welder. it is a 5-165A DC HF TIG welder with "hot" start.
All for £150.....oh and a quick demo as well, very easy to use, and so far i am a happy bunny.
If it all works then that's a big win Dave.
Also has a socket for a foot pedal and a quick look on the net shows they are easily available.....SK reckons it is a steal and should be a good welder.
well had a quick first time play with the TIG today, set it to 30A, Hot start and about 2L/min gas flow and drew an arc on to a 1.5mm stainless plate. the bead penetrated through to the other side easily so i then tried to apply a little filler rod and got a similar result then welded a 2mm wall tube to the plate .......a little practice i think i could get used to this TIG welding lark. now all i have to is knock together a project of some kind.....exhaust for the legerra....and a fuel tank....hmmm a stainless fuel tank, not going to get rust into the carb with one of them...
